Student answer (Band 6.0)

Unfortunately, I disagree. Water is the main source of life, not only humans but also plants and animals depend on it. Thus, I believe that clean water is a basic human right, yes. However, the propaganda of our world seems to contradict this very statement. Every single person living today deserves to drink clean water, but free of charge? This is a matter that needs to be dived into. With the rising inflation around the world alongside the disruption of our economy, it's close to impossible to truly relish anything for free. Even an element as basic and vital as clean water is something many cannot afford these days. I'm speaking about the homeless people, as well as the beggars.

Keeping that point in mind, it is also true that our world may encounter a global crisis of clean water within the next few years. Clean water is now being hunted vigorously but this time it's not only for human consumptiuon, it's also for the generation of Artificial Intelligence. Keeping aside the fact that although water is not free, the amount of wastage which occurs of this element in today's world is beyond fathomable. This matter is something which should not be comprehended in a shallow manner.

Therefore, I believe that every home should have a clean water supply but it should require some cost. Whenever there's a price added to something, it's bound to be considered as valuable. Thus, when something feels valuable, people are more likely to appreciate it and use it responsibly rather than taking it for granted.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student addresses the prompt by taking a clear position against free water supply, stating that while water is a basic right, pricing it ensures responsible consumption. Ideas are extended with relevant points about global inflation, water scarcity, and the high water demands of Artificial Intelligence. However, the tone is occasionally conversational and colloquial (e.g., 'This is a matter that needs to be dived into', 'Keeping aside'), which slightly detracts from formal academic discourse. Furthermore, the development of ideas leans towards generalized assertions rather than deeply elaborated arguments. Nevertheless, all parts of the task are addressed and a consistent position is maintained throughout, satisfying the criteria for Band 6.5, rounded to 6.0 based on the depth of support.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a discernible progression of ideas from acknowledging the importance of water, to discussing economic realities and resource scarcity, to concluding with the argument for pricing. Paragraphing is used logically to separate distinct points. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally mechanical or abrupt (e.g., 'Thus, I believe...', 'Keeping that point in mind...', 'Therefore...'). Referencing is generally clear, but transitional phrases lack the seamless flow characteristic of higher bands. Paragraphing is adequate, but the transitional links between paragraphs could be more sophisticated. Overall, the organizational structure meets the requirements for a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'inflation', 'disruption', 'vital', 'consumption', and 'responsibly'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'fathomable', 'vigorously', and 'relish', though some usages feel slightly unnatural or awkward in context (e.g., 'relish anything for free', 'water is now being hunted vigorously', 'beyond fathomable'). There are also minor spelling or word form inaccuracies, such as 'consumptiuon'. Despite these flaws, the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the writer's meaning without impeding communication, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional structures and relative clauses (e.g., 'Whenever there's a price added to something, it's bound to be considered as valuable'). There is a reasonable level of control over basic grammar and punctuation. However, there are several noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text, such as 'not only humans but also plants' (missing preposition 'for'), 'needs to be dived into' (incorrect passive form of 'dive'), and 'the amount of wastage which occurs of this element'. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the writing from achieving a Band 7. Therefore, a score of 6.0 is appropriate.
