Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position that clean water should be provided free of charge. The main ideas are relevant, including arguments surrounding human rights, health, and economic sustainability through water desalination and recycling. However, some arguments lack deep extension; for instance, the mention that an average person uses clean water around five times a day is a weak, undeveloped empirical claim. Furthermore, the counter-argument regarding government costs is introduced and dismissed a bit abruptly in the second and third body paragraphs. Overall, all parts of the task are addressed, placing the response solidly in the Band 6 territory.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance established in the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised appropriately to separate main ideas. Cohesive devices are employed to signal transitions, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and transitions are at times mechanical or slightly repetitive, notably with the phrase 'nevertheless' being overused ('nevertheless, recycling water can be a budget friendly option' and 'nevertheless, it is beneficial in the long term'). Logical progression is maintained, but cohesion requires more flexibility to achieve a higher band.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the student's ideas. There are attempts to use less common items and subject-specific terminology, such as 'desalination plants', 'essential', and 'inevitable dependency'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, such as spelling mistakes ('valuble' instead of valuable, 'freeto' instead of free to, 'machineries' where machinery is uncountable), and awkward word forms like 'essential for living' missing a noun. These inaccuracies prevent the score from reaching a Band 7, as word choice and spelling flaws occasionally require the reader to adjust.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditional-style structures and relative clauses. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the response, such as missing articles ('clean water is also require' instead of required, 'is a essential' instead of an essential), agreement errors ('all the humans' instead of all humans), and a comma splice in the final sentence ('long term, This essay agrees'). Despite these frequent minor errors, they rarely impede overall communication, ensuring that the grammar comfortably meets the Band 6 descriptors.
