Student answer (Band 6.0)

Water is a basic unit of life and it is essential for all living organisms. Therefore, it is a necessity for all the humans to have clean water free of cost. This essay agrees that clean water should be provided free of charge.

Firstly, clean water is a basic human right as it keeps us alive and hydrated. So, no one should pay for something this basic. Moreover, clean water is also required for bathing, cleaning and washing, which makes water an inevitable necessity. For instance, an average person uses clean water around 5 times a day. So, paying for clean water can become quite expensive for people.

Secondly, clean water is a basic requirement which means it should not be a luxury only elite can afford. While some people argue that it is costly for the government to supply clean water as it is running out and most people waste clean water, nevertheless, recycling water can be a budget friendly option. Furthermore, seawater can be a great recycling option via water desalination plants, as we know 70% of Earth contains water.

In conclusion, it is important to acknowledge that people do not value clean water and use it mindlessly, but with proper education, people can learn how valuble clean water is. While it is expensive to build water desalination plants as lots of machineries are required, nevertheless, it is beneficial in the long term, This essay agrees that clean water should be made freeto everyone, as it is a essential for living

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position that clean water should be provided free of charge. The writer outlines relevant supporting ideas in the body paragraphs, such as health necessity, affordability, and the potential of recycling and desalination plants to offset government costs. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or border on generalisations, such as the claim that 'an average person uses clean water around 5 times a day,' which lacks broader contextual depth. Nevertheless, the main position remains consistent throughout the essay, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5 or solid Band 6 performance by presenting a relevant, clearly stated argument.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as individual health benefits versus broader economic and technological solutions like desalination. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the text, utilising transition signals like 'Firstly,' 'Moreover,' 'Secondly,' and 'Furthermore.' However, cohesion can sometimes feel a bit mechanical, and referencing occasionally lacks smooth integration, particularly in the conclusion where multiple ideas are crowded together with comma splices. Overall, the logical progression is clear enough to satisfy the criteria for Band 6.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully incorporating terms like 'organisms,' 'inevitable necessity,' 'desalination plants,' and 'budget friendly.' There are, however, some noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'valuble' instead of valuable, 'freeto' instead of free to, and 'machineries' (machinery is generally uncountable). Despite these limitations, the vocabulary used is sufficient to communicate the writer's ideas clearly without impeding comprehension, aligning closely with the descriptors for Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditional and concessive clauses such as 'While some people argue that...' and 'as we know 70% of Earth contains water.' There are several grammatical and punctuation errors present, notably comma splices in the concluding sentence ('...long term, This essay agrees...') and minor agreement slips such as 'it is a essential' instead of 'an essential.' While these errors occur regularly, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the argument without difficulty. This balance of mixed structures and manageable errors places the grammar firmly at Band 6.
