Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt directly by taking a clear position that clean water should be provided free of charge. The main body paragraphs present relevant arguments, such as the fundamental nature of water for human survival, alongside counter-arguments regarding government costs and water wastage, offering solutions like recycling and desalination plants. While the ideas are generally relevant and supported, some points, such as the claim that an average person uses clean water around 5 times a day, lack precision and depth. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the criteria for Band 6.0 as it covers all parts of the task with some under-developed ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, introduction, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal progression, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and cohesive links are sometimes mechanical or repetitive, notably with the frequent, slightly clumsy transitions ('nevertheless', 'Furthermore') that affect the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas, but within paragraphs, the logical progression could be smoother. This corresponds to the Band 6 descriptor where cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'organisms', 'desalination plants', and 'dependency'. There are several attempts to use less common vocabulary, though this is sometimes accompanied by word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'basic unit of life' instead of 'source of life', and 'freeto everyone' (spacing error). Spelling is generally accurate, but limitations in range and occasional inaccuracies in word formation or phrasing keep the lexical resource at a Band 6 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The writer attempts complex structures using dependent clauses and conjunctions (e.g., 'While some people argue that...', '...as we know 70% of the Earth contains water'). However, there are noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'is also require' instead of 'is also required', missing articles, and a run-on sentence structure in the conclusion ('...long term, This essay agrees...'). Punctuation slips are also present. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in the Band 6 category.
