Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt directly by taking a clear position that clean water should be provided free of charge. Main ideas are introduced regarding human rights, economic feasibility, and water scarcity solutions such as desalination. While some arguments, such as the claim that 'an average person uses clean water around 5 times a day,' are slightly simplistic and under-developed, the writer successfully covers all parts of the task. The position is maintained throughout the essay and supported by relevant examples and reasoning, aligning well with the Band 6.0 or Band 6.5 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised effectively, dividing the main body points into distinct arguments regarding human rights and economic considerations. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly,' 'Secondly,' 'Moreover,' and 'Furthermore' are employed to structure the response, though some transitions are a bit mechanical or repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, and the logical progression from the problem of cost to potential solutions via desalination is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range suitable for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'inevitable necessity,' 'budget-friendly,' and 'desalination plants.' However, there are occasional word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as writing 'machineries' (machinery is uncountable) and 'freeto' (missing a space). Communication is never impeded by these lexical slips, and the terminology related to water conservation and public utilities is generally applied well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating subordinating clauses such as 'While some people argue that...' and 'as we know 70% of the Earth contains water.' There are some grammatical errors and punctuation issues, notably comma splices in sentences like 'nevertheless, it is beneficial in the long term, This essay agrees...' and missing punctuation in the final sentence. However, the majority of simple sentences are accurate, and errors do not impede overall comprehension.
