Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is often said that clean water is essential for human life and everyone should have access to it. Because of this, some people think governments should provide free water to every household. I completely agree with this statement because clean water is necessary for health, and paying for water can be a big burden for poor families.

To begin with, clean water is a basic need for human survival and health. People need water every day for drinking, cooking, and washing. If households do not have access to clean water, people might drink polluted water, which causes dangerous diseases like cholera or typhoid. When governments give free clean water to every home, it improves public health and reduces the medical cost for both families and hospitals. Therefore, free water is important to protect people’s lives.

Secondly, paying for water creates a heavy financial problem for low-income families. Many poor people already struggle to pay for food, electricity, and rent. If they also have to pay high bills for daily water use, they might not have enough money for other basic items. Providing free water helps reduce poverty and makes sure that everyone has equal access to a basic right, no matter how much money they earn.

However, some people worry that if water is free, people will waste it. To fix this issue, governments can give a specific amount of free water every month for basic needs. If a household uses more than that limit, they can pay a small fee. This way, water will not be wasted, and poor families can still get what they need for free.

In conclusion, I agree that clean water should be supplied to every household for free. It helps protect public health and reduces financial problems for poor families, while governments can easily manage waste with simple rules

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear and well-supported position throughout. You state your complete agreement in the introduction and maintain this stance consistently. Your ideas are extended and supported well, such as when you explain the health benefits of clean water and the financial strain on low-income families, and you even acknowledge a counterargument regarding wastage, offering a practical solution of a tiered pricing system. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise in places, and some supporting points could be further deepened with more specific real-world examples to fully reach the highest performance levels.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, starting with a strong introduction, moving through well-structured body paragraphs, and concluding effectively. You use cohesive devices flexibly, such as transition signals like 'To begin with', 'Secondly', and 'However', which guide the reader smoothly through your arguments. Referencing is generally clear, though occasionally cohesive devices feel slightly standard or mechanical rather than entirely natural. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, ensuring the overall arrangement remains coherent and easy to follow from start to finish.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your ideas with enough precision to be clearly understood. You make some attempts to use less common items, such as 'public health', 'low-income families', and 'tiered pricing implicitly', though there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, phrases like 'paying for water creates a heavy financial problem' could be phrased more naturally. Spelling and word choice errors are present, such as 'medical cost' instead of 'medical costs', but these do not impede communication, placing your vocabulary firmly at the competent level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You display a good control of grammar and punctuation, utilising a mix of simple and complex sentence forms effectively. There are frequent error-free sentences, such as your conditional structures and complex clauses in 'If households do not have access to clean water, people might drink polluted water, which causes dangerous diseases'. While a few minor errors persist, such as article omissions or slight preposition slips, they are infrequent and rarely impede communication. Your control of verb forms and tenses remains consistent throughout the essay, demonstrating a solid grasp of structural variety.
