Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear stance in agreement with the notion that clean water should be provided free of charge, using arguments related to basic human needs and health benefits. However, the ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed, which keeps the response at this level. For instance, the argument that water is essential for survival and hygiene is introduced, but it is not fully extended with detailed explanations or robust real-world examples. Phrases like 'for exemplify' and repetitive points about poor people struggling to afford water indicate that the main ideas are recycled rather than progressively elaborated. To reach a higher standard, the writer needs to expand upon their points with deeper analysis, such as discussing the socioeconomic impacts of privatised water utilities versus state-funded models, ensuring all arguments are fully sustained throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays some basic organisation, dividing the response into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the arrangement of ideas feels somewhat repetitive, with the second and third body paragraphs revisiting the same themes of affordability and government responsibility without smooth transitions. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'Examining the brighter side' to introduce a paragraph about basic survival, which does not logically fit the transitional phrase. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is weak due to faulty referencing and abrupt shifts between sentences. To improve cohesion, the writer should employ a wider range of appropriate cohesive links to signal logical relationships between ideas and ensure each paragraph has a distinct, progressive focus that guides the reader seamlessly through the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'contemporary society' and 'fundamental right', but struggles with word choice, collocation, and word formation. Examples of lexical inaccuracies include 'sanitation water supply', 'for exemplify', 'full-fill', and 'assitance', alongside awkward phrasing like 'free water supply is provided every home'. While the meaning is generally communicated despite these slips, the repetitive use of basic terms like 'water', 'people', and 'free' restricts the lexical range. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their vocabulary register, ensure accurate word formation and spelling, and focus on natural collocations appropriate for academic writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The grammatical range is limited, featuring predominantly simple sentence forms alongside faulty attempts at complex structures. There are frequent errors in grammar and sentence architecture throughout the text, such as missing auxiliary verbs, incorrect prepositions, and faulty clause structures (e.g., 'Also, it should have free water supply is provided every home', 'individuals are access to clean water', and 'Everyone have equal right'). Subject-verb agreement issues and awkward passive/active transitions are also recurrent, as seen in 'Government must be ensure' and 'It government responsility'. These frequent errors require the reader to decode the intended meaning. To progress, the writer needs to practice constructing accurate complex sentences, master basic grammatical rules such as subject-verb agreement and article usage, and reduce the frequency of structural errors.
