Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response attempts to discuss data from tables concerning New York City's population, but it completely misunderstands the task prompt, which asks whether access to clean water should be provided free of charge. Writing an Academic Task 1 report instead of a Task 2 essay means the prompt is not addressed at all. Consequently, the ideas presented are entirely off-topic, leading to a minimal and confused response to the actual requirements of the task. There is no clear position taken on the provided statement, and the writing fails to engage with the core argumentative demands of the prompt, resulting in a very low performance for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.0
The text exhibits severe issues with logical organisation and progression. Although paragraphs are used to separate different sections of the data, the sequencing of ideas within these paragraphs is confused and lacks a clear overall direction. Cohesive devices are either misused or absent, leading to fragmented sentences such as 'While The second and third tables indicate changes...' and awkward transitions like 'Turning to Other districts'. Furthermore, the entire body of text, including the introduction and overview, is unnecessarily repeated verbatim later in the response. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it very difficult for the reader to follow the progression of information or understand the relationships between the figures presented.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently relying on phrases like 'largest proportion', 'total population', and 'lowest proportion'. There are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'the total citizen of the New York City' and '1900 was satable'. Spelling and word form errors also appear throughout the text, though the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey basic numerical data points. The range of vocabulary is restricted, and attempts to use more complex terminology result in awkward or unidiomatic phrases that hinder precision. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to incorporate a wider range of less common lexical items and ensure accurate word choice.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is extremely limited, consisting mostly of fragments, run-on sentences, and faulty complex structures. There are frequent errors in basic grammar, including missing verbs, incorrect prepositions, and faulty punctuation. Examples such as 'the total citizen of the New York City at 3,437,202. while lowest proportion in 1800, at 79,216' demonstrate a lack of control over basic sentence construction. Subject-verb agreement and article usage are also problematic throughout the response. These frequent errors often cause difficulty for the reader and obscure the intended meaning, reflecting a weak command of grammatical structures.
