Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the task only partially. Additionally, it must be noted that the length requirement is not met, as the essay contains only 155 words, falling significantly short of the 250-word minimum. The writer attempts to express an opinion on whether clean water should be free, stating 'YES AM FIRMLY AGREE WITH THAT ACESS OF FREE WATER MUST FREE'. However, the position is not always clear or consistently supported due to limited development and abrupt shifts in ideas. While the writer touches on both sides—mentioning that free water can lead to waste, and noting that countries like Saudi Arabia lack resources—these points are underdeveloped and lack sufficient supporting evidence or examples. To reach a higher level, the writer would need to fully develop a clear position with well-supported arguments and meet the minimum word count requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation evident in the essay, as the writer attempts to introduce the topic, present arguments, and offer a concluding thought. However, there is no clear overall progression throughout the text. Paragraphing is attempted, but the paragraphs are brief and lack internal cohesion. Cohesive devices are either missing, inadequate, or repetitive, making the flow of ideas disjointed. For example, transitions between sentences rely heavily on basic capitalization and punctuation rather than logical cohesive links, such as 'YES THERE IS ALOT OF WATER IN THE GROUND' and 'IF WE HAVE ACESS ON CLEASN WATER'. To improve coherence and cohesion, the writer should use logical paragraph structures, ensure a clear progression of ideas from one paragraph to the next, and employ a wider range of appropriate cohesive devices to connect sentences smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The lexical resource is limited and minimally adequate for addressing the basic prompt. The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with words like 'water', 'countries', and 'clean' recurring frequently. There are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling that cause some difficulty for the reader, such as 'NEADS' instead of needs, 'ACESS' instead of access, 'CLEASN' instead of clean, and 'GOVERMENT' instead of government. Less common vocabulary is attempted with limited success, often resulting in awkward phrasing like 'HUMANS D,NT GIVE IPORTANCE TO IT'. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire, use words with greater precision and correct spelling, and incorporate less common lexical items appropriate for academic writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The writer demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex sentences that are heavily flawed. There are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and articles that can cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include missing articles ('on clean water for drinking'), incorrect verb forms ('ITS HAS FREE ACCESS', 'HUMANS D,NT GIVE'), subject-verb agreement issues ('GOVERMENT SHOULD PROVIES'), and severe punctuation errors such as abnormal spacing and unstandardized use of commas and periods. To progress to a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of sentence structures, improve control over basic grammatical rules, and reduce the frequency of errors in verb tenses, articles, and punctuation.
