Student answer (Band 6.5)
Water has been a basic necessity since the existence of the human race. It is believed that every human should have the right to free water and that every residence should have a constant supply of free water without any cost. I strongly agree with this statement, as this will help to eliminate the consumption of contaminated water and also provide a dependable water system to regions where water sources are scarce.
To begin with, many parts of society have been facing water contamination problems. This is due to available water resources, such as old wells, contaminated lakes, and ponds. The addition of a water supply source which is reliable and readily available will provide ease to individuals suffering from this problem. For example, the recent implementation of public water supplies in densely populated slums in Mumbai, Bihar, and other states in India has shown a remarkable decline in short-term illnesses caused by contaminated water.
Furthermore, a constant supply of water will provide a better water management system in regions that have limited water resources. This can be due to intense heat, low annual rainfall, and much more. The addition of a reliable water supply will provide them with a dependable water resource and will lay the pillars for better management of the water system. To cite an example, Rajasthan in India, which is widely known for covering 10% of India's land and is also a place with the lowest annual rainfall, was introduced with a piped water supply. Prior to this, it provided them with a constant supply of water and eliminated water scarcity.
In conclusion, although it is debatable whether water supply should be provided free of cost, I strongly believe that it should, as it will resolve many underlying problems, such as the elimination of the widespread consumption of contaminated water and the development of better water supply systems in regions with limited water resources.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your response successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position throughout the essay in agreement with the prompt. You introduce relevant main ideas, such as eliminating contaminated water and improving water management systems in scarce regions, and support them with specific examples like Mumbai and Rajasthan. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat uneven, showing elements of both Band 6 and Band 7. While your examples are relevant, the explanation of how making water free directly solves the economic and infrastructural challenges of water supply is slightly under-developed, tending to conflate making water a 'free human right' with simply providing infrastructural piped water supplies. To reach the next band fully, you need to extend your supporting arguments by exploring the broader socio-economic implications of providing free utilities versus infrastructure development in greater depth.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression throughout. You make use of standard cohesive devices and transitional phrases such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' to structure your thoughts. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct argument. Referencing is generally clear, though certain cohesive devices feel a bit mechanical or formulaic. To push into higher bands, you should work on integrating cohesive devices more fluidly and implicitly within and between sentences rather than relying on standard transitional markers at the start of every paragraph, ensuring that the progression of ideas feels completely natural and unobtrusive.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-related terminology such as 'water contamination', 'scarcity', 'management system', and 'short-term illnesses'. You attempt less common vocabulary items like 'dependable' and 'implementation', though there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'The addition of a water supply source' instead of 'The establishment of a reliable water source' or 'Prior to this, it provided them with a constant supply' where the referent is slightly confused. Your spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and vocabulary errors never impede communication. To achieve a higher band, you should aim for greater precision and flexibility in your word choices, integrating more sophisticated collocations and less common lexical items with tighter control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You display a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the essay, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures reasonably well. There is a good variety of sentence structures, and your control over punctuation is generally sound. However, there are some noticeable errors in grammar and prepositions, such as 'since the existence of the human race' and slight awkwardness in phrasing like 'was introduced with a piped water supply' instead of 'was provided with a piped water supply'. These errors are characteristic of a solid performance that mixes error-free sentences with occasional mistakes, though they rarely impede communication. To reach the next level, you need to increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and demonstrate finer control over prepositional usage and grammatical patterns.
