Student answer (Band 6.0)

The human body itself is 70 percent made up of water, which translates how cruicial it really is to have clean water supply accessible to you everyday. Therefore, water should be provided free of charge without any taxes of levies.

Even before the world evoluted from living like native americans to a bunch of civilised and intellectual people, every human being and animal decided that they should base themselves closer to the water streams and rivers for clean water supply. It becomes our every right to have access to clean water free of charge. Every town in every country should have a proper system that ensures that clean water is accessible to the people at home.

We should speak up and realise that we need to cut down these businesses of the rich people who are selling distilled water in the supermarkets for un-reasonable prices. Governments and the people should never allow these businesses to be successful as they play a pivotal role in why we aren't receiving the clean water supply at home. There needs to be proper filtration plants in every sector which should have pipelines to our homes that provides us with the clean water.

Even in my home country, Pakistan, I am paying for CDA water supply that barely comes even twice a week. Even in our capital city, Islamabad, many people have to fill up the water tanks in their home using water tankers and they are paying up to a thousand pakistani rupees for that one water tanker.

From paying for clean water and paying levies on water supply we are soon going to move towards no clean water at all. These huge data centres that are being built across the globe by fortune 500 companies like Meta or Nvidia, require constant water supply to keep their GPU's on a cooler temperature. People who live around these data centres are already getting their hands muddy when they open the taps in their home. We need to wake up, and decide what is actually appropriate for humanity and what is not. Do you also want to get your hands muddy when you open the tap?

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position that water should be provided free of charge. However, the development of ideas is uneven. For instance, the opening assertion that water should be free of taxes or levies is stated rather than fully reasoned. Main ideas are relevant, such as the critique of bottled water businesses and the personal example from Pakistan, but some points like the mention of data centres and GPU cooling are somewhat tangential and under-developed in relation to the core issue of residential water pricing. To reach a higher level, all ideas would need to be thoroughly extended and supported with robust, directly relevant arguments throughout the entire essay.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding thought, providing a general progression of ideas. However, paragraphing is somewhat informal and logical transitions between paragraphs can feel mechanical or abrupt, such as the sudden pivot from local Pakistani water issues to global data centres in the final section. Referencing and cohesive devices are occasionally faulty, leading to minor tracking issues for the reader. Achieving the next band would require a clearer overall progression of ideas with smoother, more sophisticated transitions and more precise management of cohesive devices between paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the writer's arguments about water access. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'pivotal role' and 'filtration plants', alongside acceptable word choices like 'civilised' and 'accessible'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form, such as 'cruicial' (spelling), 'evoluted' (incorrect word form for 'evolved'), 'taxes of levies' (preposition error), and 'un-reasonable' (hyphenation and word choice). Communication is not impeded, but reaching a higher band would demand a wider, more flexible range of vocabulary used with greater precision and stylistic control, accompanied by fewer lexical errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as conditional and relative clauses, as seen in 'Governments and the people should never allow these businesses to be successful as they play a pivotal role...' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('a water supply', 'on a cooler temperature' instead of 'at a cooler temperature'), subject-verb agreement slips, and punctuation issues. Crucially, these errors rarely impede communication and represent the typical mixed control of a solid intermediate level. To move further up, the response would need to feature a wider variety of complex structures with a much higher proportion of entirely error-free sentences.
