Student answer (Band 6.0)

Water is a basic necessity for all human beings. With this, availability of clean water is a basic right for every individual and there should be water supply for every household free of charge. I completely agree that access to clean water is a fundamental need for every individual and a basic human right to receive with no cost.

Firstly, clean water is essential for human's health, hygiene and daily life because water keeps our body healthy and hydrated. For example, in morning I daily drink a glass of water and it helps me to stay fresh for the whole day. With this, if clean water is expensive or unavailable poor families may reduce water consumption and start relying on unsafe sources. Therefore, this can increase water-borne disease and sanitation.

Secondly, distribution of water must be equal to all members of society because water is a necessity for all poor and wealthy people. For instance, in South Africa government provide qualifying low - income households equal amount of water free of charge.

With the implementation, charging for essential water supplies can increase burden on low income families. Thus, providing amount of water with no cost can protect vulnerable households while ensuring equal access.

In conclusion, water is essential need for every human being because water is neccessary for survival and daily life. In addition, declining water supplies lead to poor hygiene and increase the spread of diseases. Therefore, government should consider the difficulties faced by people and start taking action to provide equal amount of water to each households free of charge.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position that clean water should be provided free of charge. The main ideas are relevant and supported, particularly when discussing public health and the economic burden on low-income families. However, some ideas remain under-developed or briefly stated. For instance, the personal example about drinking a glass of water in the morning is simplistic and does not fully extend the argument about public health. To reach a higher level, all supporting arguments would need greater depth, avoiding overly simplistic examples and offering more fully elaborated socioeconomic consequences of free public utilities.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, and body paragraphs are marked by standard transitional markers such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related ideas. Nevertheless, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical, and referencing is not always completely clear, such as the abrupt transition in the third paragraph regarding South Africa without smoother contextual framing. To progress further, the writer should employ more sophisticated and varied cohesive devices and ensure that logical relationships between sentences flow more naturally without relying on repetitive introductory phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the main arguments with terms like 'necessity', 'consumption', and 'vulnerable households'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form, such as 'human's health' instead of 'human health', 'provide ... equal amount' instead of 'provide an equal amount', and spelling issues like 'neccessary'. Additionally, phrases like 'receive with no cost' lack idiomatic precision. To achieve a higher score, the vocabulary range needs to be wider and more flexible, displaying more precise control over less common lexical items and collocations with fewer errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully employing subordinate clauses such as 'if clean water is expensive or unavailable poor families may reduce water consumption'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly missing articles ('in morning I daily drink', 'government provide', 'each households') and minor prepositions or pluralization errors. However, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout. To move up to the next band level, the writer must demonstrate a greater frequency of error-free sentences using a wider variety of complex structures with tighter grammatical control over articles, plurals, and subject-verb agreement.
