Student answer (Band 4.0)

"Each and every living being requires water.", water is the most essential resource which every living being needs to survive. Having access to clean water is a basic human right and I strongly agree with it.

Every day there are cases where individuals die out of thirst, because they don't have clean drinking water to survive. There are enough clean water bodies on Earth which can be used for drinking purposes but due to human's greed those water bodies are used for increasing their own wealth.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, containing only 77 words, with 9 words copied directly from the prompt which are not counted. Consequently, the task is addressed only minimally. While the student attempts to take a clear position by stating 'I strongly agree with it,' the arguments regarding human greed and water scarcity are severely restricted and under-developed due to the extreme brevity of the text. To reach a higher band, the writer must expand significantly on their ideas, providing fully developed supporting arguments and relevant examples to meet the required length.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The response shows an attempt to arrange ideas logically, starting with a general statement, introducing a personal stance, and following up with supporting points about thirst and human greed. However, the overall progression is limited by the very short length, preventing the formation of fully developed paragraphs. Cohesive devices are basic, and the logical organization is interrupted by the abrupt ending of the text. To improve coherence and cohesion, the writer needs to use logical paragraphing and employ a wider range of cohesive devices to smoothly link ideas and build a sustained argument across multiple paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for basic communication, featuring common terms such as 'living being', 'essential resource', and 'basic human right'. The writer makes some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'drinking purposes' and 'human's greed', though these are simple and somewhat repetitive. There are minor awkward phrasings, but vocabulary errors do not impede understanding. To achieve a higher score, the student should incorporate a broader and more flexible range of less common lexical items, focusing on precise word choices and natural collocations related to environmental and social issues.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple sentence forms and a rudimentary attempt at a complex structure in the opening sentence. There are some basic punctuation errors, such as the misplaced comma and quotation marks in 'Each and every living being requires water.', water is...'. While grammatical errors are not excessively frequent in this brief excerpt, the limited range of structures prevents the demonstration of grammatical flexibility. To progress, the student must utilize a wider variety of complex sentence structures with greater accuracy, while maintaining firm control over punctuation and basic agreement.
