Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 250 words, as it contains only 128 words, resulting in a minimal and incomplete treatment of the prompt. While the student expresses a clear position in the introduction agreeing that clean water should be free, the ideas are severely underdeveloped due to the premature ending of the essay. The body paragraph begins to outline reasons related to water being a basic human right and naturally abundant, but it cuts off abruptly before fully expanding on these arguments or providing concrete examples. To reach a higher band, the writer must develop their ideas fully across a complete essay structure that satisfies the word count threshold, ensuring that every main point is properly explained and supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organization present, with an introductory paragraph stating the writer's position and an attempt to start a body paragraph. However, there is no clear overall progression across the text because the essay stops prematurely. Paragraphing is incomplete, as the second paragraph trails off without reaching a concluding thought or logical transition to further arguments. Cohesive devices are used in a basic manner, such as 'therefore' and 'as', but referencing becomes unclear towards the end, such as in the phrase 'makes the it easier'. To improve cohesion, the writer needs to structure the essay with distinct, complete paragraphs that logically link ideas from introduction to conclusion using a wider range of appropriate transition signals.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for expressing basic ideas. The writer attempts some appropriate terms such as 'basic human right', 'urban or rural areas', and 'state funded water supply'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, including spelling mistakes like 'posses' instead of 'possesses' and 'necissity' instead of 'necessity', as well as awkward phrasing such as 'weather it is clean or not' instead of 'whether'. These errors and the restricted range of vocabulary reflect a basic level of lexical control. To achieve a higher band, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of less common lexical items, ensure correct word forms, and eliminate spelling inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences and a few faulty attempts at complex clauses. There are frequent grammatical errors that can cause some difficulty for the reader, including missing prepositions or auxiliary verbs, such as 'urban or rural areas should all free state funded water supply' and run-on structures like 'statenment as water is'. Punctuation errors are also present, notably missing spaces after periods and commas. To progress to a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex grammatical structures with a higher proportion of error-free sentences, paying closer attention to subject-verb agreement, article use, and prepositional patterns.
