Student answer (Band 5.5)

Every human being is enshrined with certain fundamental rights by their state and clean water, food, housing is among the most basic rights. Though being a necessity it is often seen that people are ripped of their basic right to clean water and its the state responsibility to provide one. Water is a necssity used in almost all aspect of life be it drinking, cooking, washing utensils etc. Its otn seen in most places that people travel kilometers to have water and that too poluted and diry water can effect people`s health which will eventually effect their life. In Pakistan almost every houe that can afford clean water buy from a water service for drinking purpose and those who are unable to pay are left with no choice and to survive on that poluted water. Being aan essential, it is state`s responsibility to provide its citizen with clean water without any additional cost. A citizen alread pays hefty taxes on all necessities so government can atleast giv them something in return. with clean water, the chances of getting diseases are alo low which will help not only individuals but also government. All around the world, we have plenty of examples of clean water service with no additional cost for an example in Autralia people use normal tap water for drinking and household chores without any fear but in contrast to Pakistan normal tap water is used for only cleaning and washing and its not like here in Pakistan we dont have resources but because of lack on the part of government, access to clean water is a hassle. so I completely agree that access to clean water is every persons right and Government should take appropriate measure to ensure clean and free of cost water to every household.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear stance that clean water should be provided free of charge, successfully meeting the core requirements while showing aspects of the next band through relevant and extended ideas. The writer presents a clear position throughout the essay, supporting it with practical examples such as comparing the situation in Australia to Pakistan. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or rely on broad generalisations rather than deep elaboration, particularly when discussing government taxation and public health benefits. To reach a higher level, the writer should ensure that every main idea is fully extended with more precise examples and rigorous analytical depth rather than moving quickly from one point to the next.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates some organisation with a recognizable overall progression, but it suffers from a lack of clear paragraphing, as the entire body of the essay is presented as a single monolithic block of text. Cohesive devices are used, but they tend to be basic, repetitive, or occasionally faulty, leading to mechanical transitions between sentences. Pronoun referencing is not always clear, and the absence of clear paragraph boundaries makes the logical flow harder to follow. To improve, the writer needs to divide the response into distinct paragraphs with clear topic sentences, and employ a wider, more accurate range of cohesive devices to guide the reader smoothly through the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, providing a minimally sufficient range to discuss the topic of water access and government responsibility. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'fundamental rights' and 'essential', but this is accompanied by noticeable errors in spelling, word choice, and word form, such as writing 'enshrined' instead of 'endowed', 'ripped of' instead of 'deprived of', 'poluted', 'diry', 'houe', and 'aan'. These lexical errors and informal phrasing do not completely impede communication, but they cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, improve spelling accuracy, and use more precise collocations and formal phrasing appropriate for an academic context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and coordination, while attempts at more complex structures are often accompanied by punctuation and grammatical errors. There are frequent mistakes involving articles (e.g., 'its the state responsibility' and 'government can atleast giv them something in return'), subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'water service... buy'), and missing punctuation, including run-on sentences and uncapitalised proper nouns like 'Autralia' and 'Pakistan'. These errors occur with enough frequency to cause occasional difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms with better control over grammar, punctuation, and articles.
