Student answer (Band 6.5)
The availability of pure water supply in residential areas in an ongoing debate. It is the fundamental right of individuals to be provided with clean drinking water, as many people are in favor of providing impurity-free water supplies in homes. I agree with this statement, and in this essay, I will give reasons in favor of my argument.
To commence with, one major factor is the taxes that the citizens pay to the government. It can be attributed to the fact that governments generate huge revenues as people contribute to the economic development by paying taxes. So, in return the government should provide basic facilities to its residents. One key example is the access to clean water for household use, so that people don't have to buy water from the stores.
Another reason is convenience. It is particularly significant because we need water for everything, from cooking to cleaning, all tasks require water as a non-negotiable component. Therefore, availability of water in homes makes it considerably easier to cope with daily tasks. Provided that a person needs water for making tea or coffee in the morning, so for that he needs pure water supply in the home to start his day. Hence, having water supply in homes is essential, so that individuals having busy schedule don't have to struggle with basic needs.
On the other hand, critics argue that it is not feasible for governments to provide water in every household, as some people live in remote areas. This means that a huge investment and workforce is required to increase the accessibly of water. For instance, it is difficult for authorities to equip each home in mountain areas with water supply. Therefore, public filters can be installed at such places for the convenience of residents.
Although there are some areas where making water available in each house is challenging for governments, however, I believe that availability of clean drinking water is an unavoidable and fundamental right of every citizen, and it should be provided in every home.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear and consistent position in favour of providing free home water supplies. The main ideas are relevant and generally easy to follow, successfully meeting the core requirements. However, the development of ideas is uneven, which is characteristic of this level. While the point regarding taxpayer funding is reasonably extended, other arguments like the discussion of convenience are somewhat repetitive and lack deeper elaboration. To reach the next level, the writer needs to present fully extended ideas that explore the socio-economic implications in greater depth without relying on simplistic domestic examples like making morning coffee.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear organizational structure, evident through a logical introduction, distinct body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments and counter-arguments. However, the cohesion between and within sentences can occasionally feel a bit mechanical or repetitive, utilizing standard transitional markers like 'To commence with' and 'Another reason is' rather than more sophisticated cohesive devices. Referencing and progression are generally clear, but smoothing out the transitions and ensuring seamless logical flow would elevate the cohesion of the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary to communicate the central arguments effectively, successfully attempting less common items such as 'fundamental right', 'non-negotiable component', and 'feasibility'. However, there are notable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'accessibly of water' instead of accessibility, and 'impurity-free' which sounds somewhat awkward. Spelling is generally acceptable, but minor lexical infelicities prevent the writing from achieving greater precision. To improve further, the student should focus on using natural collocations and a wider variety of sophisticated phrasing with greater precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures like 'Provided that a person needs water...' and concessive clauses. There is a reasonable level of control over basic grammar, and punctuation is generally handled well. However, some errors in grammar persist, such as article misuse ('in an ongoing debate' instead of is, and 'in mountain areas' instead of mountainous areas) and slight awkwardness in clause structures. These errors rarely impede communication, but the occasional presence of faulty complex structures and preposition errors keeps the writing at this standard. Greater accuracy in complex sentences and structural variety would enhance this criterion.
