Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that access to clean water is a basic necessity of humans. Therefore, free of charge water supply should be provided to each home. I completely agree with it because clean water is essential for survival and a healthy life.

One main reason, why I agree with access to clean water is a basic human right is because the human body is made up of 60 percent water. Water is considered life for humans. The human body needs clean water to perform normal functions. In the absence of clean water the human body can suffer from dehydration and could not function properly. All cells, tissues and organs of the human body need water. They stay active and function appropriately if our body has abundant water. For instance, the human brain can only stay active if it is receiving adequate supply of water. Studies have shown that dehydration has notorious effects on the human body and brain.

Other significant reason, why I agree with this view is because water is essential for a healthy life. Dirty water can cause diseases in both adults and children. Long term usage of dirty water can affect our organs. For example, huge amounts of calcium in drinking water can cause kidney stones. Our brain gets affected by excessive zinc in drinking water. So clean water is necessary for prevention of diseases.

In conclusion, I completely agree that free of charge clean water is a basic human right because it is essential for life and reduces the incidence of diseases in the humans.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout in agreement with the prompt. Relevant ideas are introduced regarding survival, bodily functions, and the prevention of health issues. However, some ideas are under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, the mention of calcium and zinc in drinking water is stated as a broad claim without sufficient supporting detail or specific examples from general knowledge to fully substantiate the argument. Additionally, note that 9 words copied directly from the prompt were not counted toward the minimum length.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear central topic. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different arguments, such as physiological needs versus health benefits. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'For instance' and 'In conclusion', but referencing and transitions can occasionally feel a bit mechanical, as seen in the phrase 'Other significant reason, why I agree'. Progression is generally logical, pointing towards a half-band achievement by maintaining clear organisation throughout, though smoother linking between sentences would elevate the structure further.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'dehydration', 'physiological', and 'incidence'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'free of charge water supply' instead of 'a free water supply', and 'notorious effects' where 'detrimental effects' would be more natural. Spelling and word-choice errors do not impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow the arguments presented.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional ideas appropriately. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('In the absence of clean water the human body') and minor punctuation slips like unnecessary commas before relative clauses ('One main reason, why I agree'). Despite these occasional errors, they rarely impede communication, and the grammatical control remains generally stable throughout the text.
