Student answer (Band 6.0)

Access to clean water is basic necessity for every living organism to survive. Every home must have a clean water supply by the governments of respective states. Free supply of clean water is basic human right. I strongly agree with this view, as everyone should have access to safe drining water regardless of their financial situation.

Firstly, clean water is necessary for maintaining good health and preventing diseases. People need water not only for drinking but also for other uses such as cooking, washing food and maintaining basic hygiene. If the supply of water is not free than the poor families cannot afford to pay and they may be forced to use unsafe sourse, which can lead to serious helat problems. For example, contaminated water can cause diarrhoe and cholera. Therefore, providing a basic amount of clean water could protect public healthand improves peples quality of life.

On the flip side, free access to water can help reduce inequality in society. Water is not a luxury product, it is an essential requirement for every individual. low income families often have to spend a significant part of their income on basic necessities. If the government provied certain amount of clean water without charge, these families can use their limited money for other important needs such as food, education and healthcare. However, I do not believe that people should use unlimited amount if water for free. This could encourage unnesessary comsumption and can cause water shortage.

To conclude, I strongly agree that every home should have free access to basic supply of clean water. It would protect people's health, reduce inequalityand ensure that everyone can enjoy this essential human right.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position throughout that clean water should be a free basic human right provided by governments. The main ideas are generally relevant, such as the discussion on public health benefits and reducing societal inequality. However, certain aspects are under-developed rather than fully extended; for instance, the point regarding low-income families saving money for education and healthcare is introduced but not thoroughly expanded with deeper explanation. To move into higher bands, the writer needs to provide more fully elaborated arguments and support points with deeper, more comprehensive reasoning rather than relying on brief mentions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introducing the topic to discussing health, societal inequality, and a concluding stance. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with distinct paragraphs dedicated to separate sub-topics. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or basic, utilizing standard connectors like 'Firstly', 'On the flip side', and 'To conclude'. Referencing is mostly clear, but transitional links between sentences occasionally lack fluidity. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, the writer should employ a wider range of cohesive devices more subtly and ensure smoother transitions between ideas without relying on formulaic signposts.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common expressions such as 'financial situation', 'essential requirement', and 'unnecessary consumption'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, such as 'drining' instead of 'drinking', 'sourse' instead of 'source', 'helat' instead of 'health', 'diarrhoe' instead of 'diarrhoea', 'peples' instead of 'people's', 'provied' instead of 'provided', and 'comsumption' instead of 'consumption'. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they reflect limitations in accuracy. To progress further, the student must expand their control of less common lexical items and improve spelling precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully utilizing structures like conditional ideas and subordinate clauses, such as 'If the government provied certain amount of clean water without charge, these families can use their limited money...'. There are several grammatical and punctuation errors present, including missing articles ('is basic necessity', 'is basic human right'), preposition misuse ('supply of water is not free than'), agreement issues ('unlimited amount if water'), and missing spaces after punctuation marks. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication. To reach higher bands, the writer must increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over articles and prepositions.
