Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position that clean water should be provided free of charge as a basic human right. However, the task is only partially addressed because the development of ideas is limited and somewhat repetitive. For instance, the point regarding health issues is introduced with limited elaboration, stating simply that dirty water causes disease without deeply exploring broader socioeconomic impacts. Furthermore, it is important to note that the response does not meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, falling short at 232 words, which negatively impacts the overall task completion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays some organization, with basic paragraphing used to separate ideas such as health benefits, water wastage, and the concluding stance. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow between sentences is occasionally disjointed. Cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, or inadequate; words like 'also', 'so', and 'because' are relied upon heavily without a diverse range of linking words. Additionally, referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to follow the logical links between the arguments presented across the paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. There are multiple spelling and word-form errors, such as writing 'clan' instead of 'clean', 'aslo' instead of 'also', 'childerns' instead of 'children', and 'adualt' instead of 'adult'. Furthermore, collocation and word choice are basic, featuring phrases like 'check and balance on these wastages' which lack the precision and natural phrasing expected for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and basic coordination. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, marred by widespread errors in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'every human being have', 'adult cannot drink'), missing articles, and incorrect punctuation, including a complete lack of capitalisation at the beginnings of sentences and for pronouns like 'i'. These frequent errors require the reader to exert effort to decode the intended meaning.
