Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, it has been debated that clean water is a basic human need. That's why water should be provided free of charge to every home. I completely agree that fresh water should be provided to all humans free of charge. There are several reasons for my viewpoint, some of which follow in the paragraphs.

The primary reason from my view is the human health, as it is the basic neccesity of human body. Furthermore, humans are suffering in different parts of the world because fresh water is not accessible to them. For example, countries like those in Africa and India are suffering from fatal diseases caused by water because they are using dirty water. On the other hand, countries like the United Arab Emirates and Dubai have overcome this problem, as they have generational wealth and a lot of natural resources. The main point here is that, in other countries where people can't afford pure water, they should be given these facilities for free by the government. In light of the major problems, it is clear that clean water is a basic human need and should be free.

Another compelling reason is the daily use of clean water. Water is in bathing, washing clothes and dishes. As well as for agriculture and livestock, we need water. For instance, people are selling their animals as fresh water is not provided enough to fulfill the needs of their cattle, so they are dying because of many diseases as recorded in the previous research. Keeping the above aspects, it is evident that clean water is a basic need and it should be free.

In conclusion, the reasons related to human health and the daily use of water justify that fresh water is a basic human need and should be provided to everyone for free. One suggestion for the world's largest organization is that they can use different water-cleaning plants to purify water so that it can be made available to the entire population of the world

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on whether clean water should be free. The main viewpoint is maintained throughout the essay. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, which places it at this level. For instance, while the health implications in developing regions are reasonably discussed, other points such as the mention of 'Dubai' and the UAE possessing 'generational wealth' are slightly disjointed from the core argument about universal rights. To reach a higher level, the writer would need to extend and support all arguments more thoroughly without relying on vague generalisations or abrupt examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, and the writing is divided into logical paragraphs. Cohesion is present, though it is sometimes mechanical or repetitive, such as the recurring transitional phrases like 'The primary reason from my view is' and 'Another compelling reason is'. Referencing can also be slightly unclear at times, as seen in the sentence 'Water is in bathing, washing clothes and dishes.' To improve, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs without relying on formulaic expressions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the main ideas. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'generational wealth' and 'fatal diseases', but there are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling, such as 'neccesity' instead of 'necessity' and phrasing like 'Water is in bathing' instead of 'Water is used for bathing'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they restrict the score. To achieve a higher level, the writer needs to demonstrate greater precision in word choice and collocation, while eliminating spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the response, such as 'In recent years, it has been debated that clean water is a basic human need.' There are some errors in grammar, such as missing prepositions or incorrect verb forms in clauses like 'people are selling their animals as fresh water is not provided enough', but these errors rarely impede communication and the punctuation is generally controlled. To move to the next level, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex structures with consistent control over articles, prepositions, and dependent clauses.
