Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially. While the student clearly states their agreement with the proposition that clean water is a basic human right and should be free, the position is expressed rather repetitively without sufficient extension or support. Ideas are limited and under-developed; for instance, the assertion that water can boost the immune system and prevent dangerous diseases is introduced without explanation or relevant examples. Similarly, the argument regarding water wastage and government responsibility is stated in very simple terms rather than being logically elaborated. To reach a higher level, the writer would need to present a well-developed position with fully elaborated main points, supporting each argument with relevant explanations and specific examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
Information and ideas are not arranged in a truly coherent progression throughout the response. The text lacks clear paragraphing, presenting most of the content in one large block with no clear separation of ideas, followed by a final concluding block. Although some basic cohesive devices are used, such as 'Moreover' and 'so', they are often repetitive and mechanically applied, which disrupts the natural flow of the essay. Referencing and logical sequencing are also problematic, as thoughts jump abruptly between health benefits, conservation issues, and government action. To improve, the writer needs to organise the essay into distinct, logical paragraphs and use a wider range of cohesive devices smoothly to guide the reader through a clear progression of ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer relies heavily on basic, repetitive terms and phrases, such as 'human being', 'free of cost', and 'basic human right', which are repeated numerous times throughout the text. There are also noticeable errors in word choice, form, and collocation, such as 'doing wastage of water' instead of 'wasting water', and 'acess water' instead of 'access water'. These lexical shortcomings cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted linguistic range. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their vocabulary, incorporate less common lexical items with greater precision, and avoid repetitive phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, consisting mostly of simple sentences linked by basic conjunctions. Attempts at complex or varied structures are largely absent, and when present, they are often faulty, as seen in erroneous constructions like 'Without water human being cannot be survive' and 'it is depend upon on human being'. Furthermore, there are frequent errors in verb forms, tenses, subject-verb agreement, and articles throughout the text, such as 'The government have to play' and 'the water sell in the market'. Punctuation is also weak, with widespread misuse of lowercase letters at the beginning of sentences and erratic spacing around punctuation marks. Frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and indicate a need for much stronger control over basic grammar and sentence patterns.
