Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response addresses the task only minimally and fails to meet the required word count, as it contains only 178 words instead of the minimum 250 words. Furthermore, the writing is incomplete, stopping abruptly in the middle of a sentence at the end of the third paragraph. While the writer touches upon the prompt by discussing the role of government and the concept of capitalism regarding water supply, the ideas remain heavily under-developed and tangential due to the lack of a full essay structure and sufficient length. To improve, the writer must ensure the essay reaches the required word count, fully develops arguments regarding whether water should be free, and provides a clear conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays some basic organization with distinct paragraphs attempting to introduce the topic, present background, and discuss government involvement. However, there is no clear overall progression because the text cuts off abruptly. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes inaccurate, such as using 'While many lawmakers... many of the still lag behind' where referencing is unclear. Paragraphing is initiated, but the final paragraph is left unfinished. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to ensure all ideas are logically sequenced with clear transitions between sentences and paragraphs, leading to a complete and cohesive conclusion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic concepts related to the topic, such as 'essential need', 'capitalism', and 'potable water'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that detract from the quality, including 'ever living beigns', 'Civilaization', 'beliving', 'cosuming', and 'rulling'. The writer attempts less common vocabulary like 'demographics' and 'uncompromised', but these are accompanied by errors in collocation and form that sometimes cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer should focus on accurate spelling and expanding the range of functional academic vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, with frequent errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. There are issues with article usage, prepositions, and verb forms, such as 'all humans have equal right on consuming water' instead of 'to consume', and 'that is hold responsibile' instead of 'held responsible'. Attempts at complex sentences often result in faulty grammar, such as in the final sentence which remains incomplete. To improve, the writer needs to practise forming accurate simple and complex sentences, paying closer attention to subject-verb agreement, passive voice constructions, and basic grammatical accuracy.
