Student answer (Band 6.0)

Opinions remain sharply divided over the access of water, with some highlighting the need of having a water supply provided free of charge, while others argue that it requires a lot of investmemt and other hurdles too.

On the one hand, clean water is undoubtedly a basic human right. Having a clean water supply keeps and individual free from water-proned disease and other illness also. Clean water prevents the spread of disease like cholera, dengue etc. If water carries a high price tag, underpriviledged families might rely on unsafe water sources, creating severe health crisis. Therefore, providing a standard, essential volume of water to every household at no cost ensures that no one is deprived of the survival necessity.

On the other hand, purification of water is quite a difficult and time-conuming process. Huge investments are required to establish a system to generate huge amount of distilled water to satisfy the need of every household. To generate clean water for every home is a very time-consuming process. When a resource is completely free, people lose the incentive to conserve it. This lack of accountibility leads to wastage of the resources. Rendering water for free without any limits could lead to severe environmental and logistical consequences.

In conclusion, while I firmly support the idea that a basic quota of clean water should be provided to every home free of charge as a human right, I do not believe unlimited usgae should be entirely free. Achieving a symbiotic balance between the two remains the best approach.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both sides of the issue and presenting a clear, well-supported personal position. The writer explores the human rights perspective regarding free water access as well as the practical and environmental challenges of such a policy. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed, particularly the arguments concerning resource conservation and logistical consequences, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher level. The main position is well-maintained throughout the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, effectively covering the requirements of the prompt with relevant and mostly extended arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and a concluding stance. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each body paragraph dedicated to a distinct viewpoint. Cohesive devices are generally present and help guide the reader through the arguments, though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel a bit mechanical, such as the rigid use of 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. While the overall structure provides a clear flow of information, smoothing out these transitional links and ensuring tighter logical connections between sentences would elevate the organizational quality.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the intended meaning. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items, such as 'symbiotic balance', 'underprivileged', and 'purification', but these attempts are occasionally accompanied by minor inaccuracies or spelling errors, such as 'investmemt', 'water-proned', and 'time-conuming'. Word choice and spelling errors are present throughout the text, but they do not impede communication. To reach a higher standard, the writer needs to demonstrate a more consistent range of precise lexical choices and eliminate basic spelling slips while using collocation with greater accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable ability to construct multi-clause sentences. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as article omissions and prepositions within specific phrases like 'access of water' instead of 'access to water', and 'unlimited usgae'. However, these grammatical errors rarely impede communication and do not obscure the overall meaning of the text. The writer maintains adequate control over basic verb forms and sentence structures, showing sufficient control to communicate the central arguments clearly, though a higher band would require a wider variety of error-free complex structures.
