Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadys, Some people think that access to clean water is a basic human right and every home should have a water supply should be provided free of charge.I disagree with the idea that every home should get free water, even though clean water is a basic human right.

In stark manifestation, the main problem with supplying free water is the high costing bulding and fixing water system. If government will offer free water to public then it will imapct their budget. They have build to new water plants to remove germs and fix broken pipes.

If water is free, governments will not have enough money to maintain these systems. This often leads to dirty water and broken pipes, which hurts people instead of helping the

nother big issue is waste. When something is free, people do not value it and tend to waste it. If water costs nothing, people might leave taps running, ignore leaks, or use too much water to wash cars and water lawns. Today, many parts of the world suffer from droughts and climate change, so wasting water is very dangerous.

Instead of making water completely free, a better option is a tiered pricing system. In this system, a small, basic amount of water for drinking and cooking is very cheap or free for poor families. However, if a household uses more than that basic amount, they have to pay a higher price. This protects poor people while stopping others from wasting water

In conclusion, making water free for everyone does not work in the real world. Charging a fair price for water usage is necessary to keep our water supply clean and stop people from wasting our most important resource.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by clearly stating a position on whether free water should be provided to every home, maintaining this stance throughout the essay. The ideas are extended and supported, such as discussing infrastructure maintenance costs and water wastage due to climate change, and proposing a tiered pricing system. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise in the development, and a few parts lack full extension, which keeps the response at this level. Note that 9 words copied directly from the prompt were excluded from the official word count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression throughout. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction, two body paragraphs supporting the writer's view, a counter-proposal paragraph, and a conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or slightly faulty, such as the abrupt transition in 'In stark manifestation,' and the incomplete sentence ending the second paragraph ('helping the'). Referencing is mostly clear, but the overarching cohesive devices could be managed more flexibly to achieve a higher standard.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'infrastructure', 'tiered pricing system', and 'droughts'. However, there are some word-choice and spelling errors that show inaccuracy, such as 'Nowadys' instead of 'Nowadays', 'costing bulding' instead of 'cost of building', 'imapct' instead of 'impact', and 'have build to new' instead of 'have to build new'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they reflect a typical profile for this lexical level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over conditional sentences ('If water is free, governments will not have enough money...') and relative clauses. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly with verb forms, articles, and prepositions inside grammatical patterns, such as 'a water supply should be provided' (unnecessary modal/passive overlap), 'If government will offer' (incorrect use of future tense in conditional clauses), and missing articles ('to public'). While these errors rarely impede communication, the presence of frequent mistakes across complex structures prevents the writing from reaching a higher band.
