Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is an ongoing debate on whether it is the duty of government to ensure everyone gets water at free of cost since people needs clean water for their life. I agree that water should be available at free of money because it ensures equality and the improves the quality of life of every citizen.

One of the important reason in favour of this argument is that providing water for everyone without creating burden on the families economy ensures social equality. People who are wealthy enough will have money to purchase water, but the poor people will have no choice but to struggle for water. The basic need of human is made a question through fixing a price for water, resulting in great injustice for citizens of the government.

Another important reason to support this claim is that water forms a signicant part in daily life of people, affecting the availabilty of water results in stunt quality of life of people. Water is needed for multiple purposes such as drinking, cooking, washing, etc. Without providing water at free will directly affects people's life. For example, in case of depleted water availablity, people tend to use untreated water, which gives harmful diseases. Therefore, the government has to ensure everybody gets clean water for the welfare of its citizen.

To conclude, though water resources are depleting day by day, it becomes an utmost priority of the government to satisfy the fundamental need of people by providing water at free of cost to ensure equality and improve the lifestyle of the people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, presenting a clear position that water should be provided free of charge to ensure equality and improve the quality of life. The main ideas are relevant and supported, showing a solid understanding of the task. However, the development is somewhat uneven. For instance, the argument regarding social equality and the economic burden on families is introduced well, but the supporting points in the second body paragraph, such as the mention of untreated water leading to harmful diseases, remain slightly generalized and lack deeper elaboration. To reach the next level, the ideas would need more fully extended support, incorporating specific examples or broader socioeconomic analysis rather than stopping at surface-level assertions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear central topic maintained throughout the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Information and ideas are logically sequenced, beginning with a clear stance, moving through distinct supporting arguments regarding equality and daily life, and ending with a summarizing restatement. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a single central theme. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as 'One of the important reason' and 'Another important reason to support this claim'. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or repetitive, and minor structural errors in cohesive links prevent the flow from being entirely seamless. Greater variety and more subtle transitional phrases would elevate the organizational control.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating a sufficient range to communicate the main arguments about public services and basic human rights. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items, such as 'fundamental need', 'socioeconomic', or terms related to water availability, but these attempts occasionally suffer from inaccuracies in collocation, word form, or phrasing, as seen in expressions like 'at free of cost', 'families economy', and 'stunt quality of life'. Furthermore, there are awkward phrasings such as 'free of money'. While these lexical shortcomings do not impede overall communication and the reader can easily grasp the intended meaning, they reflect the limitations characteristic of this band. To improve, the writer should focus on precise word choices and natural collocations rather than repeating similar phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and conditional structures to build the argument. There is a control over basic sentence construction, but a noticeable presence of grammatical errors persists across the text. These include subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'people needs', incorrect prepositions and articles like 'at free of cost' or 'in case of depleted water availabilty', and pluralization slips such as 'harmful diseases' used generally or agreement within noun phrases like 'families economy'. Although these errors occur regularly, they rarely impede communication, as the intended message remains clear. To achieve a higher level of accuracy, the writer needs to exercise greater vigilance over minor grammatical patterns, articles, and prepositions within complex sentences.
