Student answer (Band 5.5)

For individuals and society, few things are more crucial than water. In many parts of the world, considerable attention is given to clean water, as it plays an important role in providing better opportunities. Access to purified water is a basic human right. government should provide a water supply for every house free of charge. Nevertheless, I firmly agree with this statement because it allows us to avoid various diseases and stay fit.

To commence with, water is considered increasingly beneficial for people's lives, creating a better lifestyle, such as staying fit, which may not be available from other sources. Moreover, it demonstrates significant health benefits, influencing and enhancing well-being. People seek a better standard of living. Japan, for instance, has organised a 100% pure water supply for individuals so that they can not face any difficulties with it. Everywhere, the government has constructed arsenic-purifying water pumps, and anyone can drink without any cost. Therefore, a good, healthy lifestyle leads to what they can.

On the other hand, without clean water, no one can survive for a single day. Society and individuals need this urgently for safety purposes. There appear to be significant reasons because if they do not drink pure water, they have to face various diseases such as loose stools, diarrhea, and so on. For example, in 2019, there were plenty of people facing challenging times due to flood issues. Many people could not collect clean water from anywhere at that time in Bangladesh. As a result, people in every society need safe water pumps. On top of that, the government should address this issue and solve it as soon as possible. Thus, everyone can live a healthy life.

In conclusion, although purifying water consumes a significant amount of money, it helps us to avoid various diseases and stay fit. Apart from that, the government should invest more money in it and provide it free of charge to everyone.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and presents a clear position agreeing that free water should be provided to every home. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the point about preventing diseases is supported with examples such as Bangladesh in 2019, other points remain under-developed or somewhat repetitive, such as the general health benefits mentioned in the first body paragraph. The reference to Japan is also slightly vague in how it supports the argument of completely free home water supplies for everyone. To move to a higher band, all main arguments need to be fully extended and supported with clearer reasoning and more precise examples throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the writing into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. Transition markers like 'To commence with' and 'On the other hand' are used, but the logical progression between sentences within paragraphs lacks smoothness. For instance, the transition from lifestyle benefits to the example of Japan feels abrupt. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in the concluding sentence of the first body paragraph ('leads to what they can'), which disrupts the flow of ideas. Improving the logical links between sentences and ensuring smoother transitions would enhance the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'crucial', 'well-being', and 'significantly'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, but these are accompanied by some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'loose stools' instead of gastrointestinal issues, and 'flood issues' rather than flooding or flood disasters. Spelling and word formation are generally controlled well enough so that communication is not impeded, but errors in precision prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher level. To improve, the writer should focus on natural phrasing and more precise collocations related to public health and government policy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and varied structures. There are, however, several errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('government should provide' instead of 'the government should provide'), subject-verb agreement issues ('every house' followed by plural references or mismatched items), and awkward phrasing in complex clauses. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication, and the meaning generally remains clear. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to produce a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over articles and singular/plural forms.
