Student answer (Band 6.0)

Clean water is the basic necessity of human being. Consequently, free supply of clean water should be provided to every household. I strongly agree with this view as purified water is required by human beings for drinking, cleaning and cooking purposes. Moreover, impure water tends to several health issues which is the major concern.

Drinkable water should be available for free as it is the basic necessity of human being. Our body is made of 70% of water. Without water, no one can survive more than three days. So clean water must be available for everyone for drinking purposes. Moreover, pure water is required for cleaning purposes as well. We require clean water for doing dishing and cleaning our houses.

On the other hand, contaminated water leads to several health issues. One of the major disease caused by impure water is diarrhea. It can lead to the death of the person. As health is wealth, if the person is not feeling well, there is nothing that can amuse him. Therefore, fresh portable water must be available for everyone regardless of the class of the person as it is the basic human right. Government should take all the possible steps to provide clean water to everyone.

In conclusion, clean drinkable water must be available for everyone in the world regardless of the social group of the person as it is the basic right of every person alive. Apart from drinking, it is used in everyday household chores from cleaning to cooking.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position that agrees with the prompt, noting that clean water is a basic human right and should be provided free. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For example, the arguments regarding health issues and personal survival are relevant, but points like cleaning and household chores are repetitive and under-developed, lacking extension or specific examples. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to explore the implications of free water provision more deeply and support all main arguments with fully elaborated explanations rather than restating similar points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance maintained throughout the response. Paragraphing is utilised, though some paragraphs could be organized more logically to group related ideas together rather than repeating points about cleaning across different sections. Cohesive devices such as 'Consequently', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore' are employed, but referencing and transitions can occasionally feel mechanical or repetitive, particularly with the frequent use of 'moreover'. To improve further, the writer should ensure a smoother progression of ideas between paragraphs and employ a wider, more natural variety of cohesive links.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the main points despite some limitations. The writer attempts less common vocabulary, such as 'contaminated', 'diarrhea', and 'regardless', but also makes noticeable word-choice and collocation errors, such as using 'portable water' instead of 'potable water' and 'doing dishing' instead of 'doing the dishes'. Spelling is generally acceptable, and while these lexical slips do not impede communication, they reflect a restricted range and precision. Expanding the variety of precise terminology and improving collocational awareness would elevate the lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The text demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional clauses and relative clauses. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as article omissions and preposition issues in phrases like 'tends to several health issues' instead of 'leads to' or 'results in', and 'disease caused' instead of 'diseases caused'. However, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout. To move towards a higher band, the writer should increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and exercise greater control over articles and prepositions.
