Student answer (Band 6.0)
I agree that access to free water which is a basic human right be provided free of charge to every home. Water is one of the most essential elements of life, and nature has made it to be in abundance. The world is covered by 60% of water, and we also have abundance of it in the form of rainfall. Science has proven without reasonable doubts, that water, which is one of the six classes of food, is even more important to man than food. It is the government's responsibility to to provide the basic need of her citizens. And since the cost of providing portable water, which is fit for drinking is very low, the government has no excuse for not making water available for her citizens. Talking from experience, I grew up in a village where access to treated waterfit for drinking seemed to be a luxury. We had a community borehole, which was rarely treated, and modtly not always functional to serve members of the community. It worked once in a blue moon, and days it did, fetching water from there was a tug of war. So we fetched water taht we used for cooking, drinking, bathing, washing, and other domestic uses from the community stream. This water from the stream was not fit for drinking as it was not treated. And because open defecation was also practiced, when it rained, faeces from surrounding bushes are washed down to the river. Also, because the same river is used for other things like washing and bathing, the water was not free from contamination. Also, due to lack of proper sensitization of citizens on water treatment, people ignorantly drank the stream water without proper treatment. As a result of this, a lot of persons in the society fell sick as a result of cholera, some even at the point of losing their lives. In the advent of boreholes, individuals sold water to citizens, even when they fail to properly treat the water and make it fit for drinking.
Up to date, a lot of persons don't have access to clean water, and many also suffer from sicknesses resulting from drinking contaminated water.
Therefore, I urge the government to provide portable water, fit for drinking to her citizens, as it is their basic right. Thanks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the opening and conclusion: you support government-provided free water because it is essential and a basic right. The account of your village gives relevant, concrete support, particularly the unreliable borehole, contaminated stream and resulting cholera cases. This addresses the question and shows some development beyond a general assertion. However, the response focuses mainly on the need for clean water, rather than fully examining why the supply should be free of charge. The claims that water is abundant and that providing treated water costs very little are asserted without sufficient explanation, and the discussion of government responsibility could be developed further. To strengthen the argument, explain how free provision could be funded and why charging households would be unfair or harmful.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable overall direction: it states a view, gives a personal example and ends by restating the recommendation. The village experience also follows a broadly understandable sequence from an unreliable borehole to unsafe stream water and illness. However, most of the response is presented as one long paragraph, so the main stages of the argument are not clearly separated. Several sentences begin with “Also,” and the repeated use of “as a result” makes connections feel mechanical. The final paragraph repeats the central point without adding a distinct concluding summary. Use separate paragraphs for the argument, personal example and conclusion, and vary linking expressions while making each paragraph’s purpose clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “treated water,” “contamination,” “open defecation” and “basic right,” and the personal example communicates the seriousness of unsafe water. However, the range is uneven, with repeated general words such as “water,” “people” and “citizens,” and some word choices or collocations are inaccurate. For example, “portable water” should be “potable water,” while “six classes of food” and “in the advent of boreholes” do not express the intended meanings naturally. There are also spelling errors such as “modtly” and “taht.” Aim for precise, natural phrasing and check spelling; for instance, distinguish water’s availability in nature from the cost of treating and distributing it.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses explaining how rain carries waste into the river and how contamination affects health. The main ideas are generally understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems reduce accuracy. Examples include “the government's responsibility to to provide,” “when it rained, faeces … are washed down,” and “a lot of persons … don't have access,” where repetition, tense consistency and agreement need attention. The opening sentence also has an awkward clause structure: “I agree that access to free water which is a basic human right be provided free of charge.” Break long sentences into clearer units, check subject–verb agreement and tense, and proofread for repeated words and sentence boundaries.
