Access to clean water is a basic human right. Therefore every home should have a water supply that is provided free of charge.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, it is frequently argued that the attainability of clean water is essential for humans; consequently, each household should be provided with a complimentary water supply. I completely disagree with this view, primarily because it will diminish the value of pure water, and it will contribute to excessive budgets to facilitate people with clean water.

One of the main reasons for this is that it will exacerbate the importance of water. Access to clean water is crucial for human survival, so it should be used responsibly. If a free water supply is provided to citizens, it will result in excessive waste of water; for example, individuals will begin to clean their cars frequently with more water, and the use of water in gardens will subsequently increase. Giving free water is viable, but it has drawbacks, such as desalination of water consists of a large proportion of cost involved which the state has to bear. Moreover, water transportation requires water pipelines spread across the city for better accessibility.

On the other hand, water undoubtedly is important for human life. The implications of unpaid water will have both positive and negative impacts. The availability of free clean water alleviates health issues, as the use of clean water decreases health issues and improves the hygiene level of individuals. Having a costless water supply for individuals will be beneficial, as they can do chores without any water-related stress.

In conclusion, although both perspectives have merit, I firmly believe that clean water should not be free for households, as it has hidden costs and should be integrated into citizens' taxes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you disagree with free household water, mainly because of waste and the costs of supplying it. You also acknowledge benefits, including improved hygiene and reduced health problems, so the response addresses both sides of the issue. However, some points are not fully explained. For example, the claim that free water would “diminish the value” is not clearly developed, and the examples about car washing and gardens would be stronger if you explained how charging for water would discourage this waste. The cost argument also needs more precise support. Develop each main reason with a clear explanation and a relevant example to make your case more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the overall position is easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “One of the main reasons,” “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes uneven: the first body paragraph moves from responsible use to examples of waste and then to desalination and pipelines without clearly connecting these points. The second paragraph introduces benefits but does not explain how they relate to your disagreement. Some linking is also mechanical, and “On the other hand” suggests a contrast that could be made more explicit. Group related ideas and use clearer references between claims and explanations.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “desalination,” “water transportation,” “accessibility,” “alleviates” and “hygiene.” These choices show an effort to use less common and topic-specific language. Some expressions, however, are inaccurate or unnatural, which reduces precision: “exacerbate the importance of water” does not express the intended idea, while “excessive budgets” and “costless water supply” are awkward in context. “The use of water in gardens will subsequently increase” is understandable but could be more direct and natural. Aim for accurate collocations rather than choosing formal-sounding words. More precise phrasing would help communicate your arguments clearly and make the vocabulary more flexible.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional sentences (“If a free water supply is provided…”) and subordinate clauses explaining consequences. Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and punctuation is generally controlled. Some grammatical problems remain. In “desalination of water consists of a large proportion of cost involved,” the structure is difficult to follow; a clearer construction would be “desalination accounts for a large proportion of the cost.” The sentence beginning “The implications of unpaid water will have…” also has an unclear grammatical relationship between its subject and verb. There is an extra space after “Moreover,” and some long sentences would benefit from clearer clause boundaries. Continue using complex forms, while checking that subjects, verbs and clause relationships are precise.
