Student answer (Band 6.0)

Water is a basic necessity of human life and it is essential for humans to have access to clean water free of cost. I agree that humans should be provided with clean water without any charge as it is necessary for human life. Although, excessive use and wastage of water should be prevented.

To commence with, the main reason that water should be free is it is basic necessity not a luxury. Water is needed for common things like cooking, drinking and in hygiene. If it is not free than it would be challenging for humans in doing household tasks. Moreover, drinking contaminated water could be harmful for individuals. For instance, population living in rural areas are struggling with clean water and they have to drink water from lakes and ponds which is polluted with animal and human waste. As a result, it increases the chances of diseases in rural areas, most commonly diarrhea and desentry.

Another reason for free supply of water is that people will maintain their hygiene. It could also help in improving the lifestyle. However, some people use water in access quantities and resulting in wastage of water. The Government should set a limit for free water and using water beyond that limit should be charged a minimal amount, so wastage of water could be prevented.

To conclude, water plays a vital role in human life and should be provided free of cost so that it could be easily accessible for all citizens. However, Authorities should implement certain laws for preventing excessive usage and wastage of water

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you agree that clean water should be free, while recognising that excessive use needs to be controlled. You address the main parts of the question and support the health argument with a relevant example about rural communities using polluted lakes and ponds. This gives the response a solid, relevant foundation. However, some points are less fully developed: the claim that free water improves hygiene and lifestyle is stated but not explained with a specific consequence or example. The proposed limit on free water is also useful, but you could clarify how it would protect basic household needs while discouraging waste. More balanced development of these ideas would make the argument more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure, moving from your position to two supporting paragraphs and a conclusion. Paragraphs generally have identifiable purposes, and signposts such as “Moreover,” “Another reason,” and “To conclude” help readers follow the argument. The progression is coherent, though some linking is mechanical and a few connections could be clearer. For example, “However” introduces the concern about excessive use, but the relationship between that concern and the preceding point about hygiene could be explained more smoothly. The phrase “and resulting in wastage” also makes the sentence connection awkward. Use fewer formulaic transitions and make the logical links between claims explicit; this would improve cohesion while preserving the clear paragraph structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “contaminated water,” “hygiene,” “household tasks,” and “excessive use,” so the main ideas are communicated clearly. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as describing water polluted by “animal and human waste.” However, several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors reduce precision: “free of cost” is less natural than “free of charge,” “in access quantities” is incorrect, and “desentry” is misspelled. Repetition of “free” and “water” also limits flexibility. Aim to learn common collocations and check spelling, while choosing precise terms such as “water consumption” or “waterborne diseases” where appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional construction (“If it is not free…”) and a relative clause describing polluted water. Most sentences remain understandable, and errors do not generally prevent the reader from following your argument. Some grammatical problems persist, however. In “the main reason that water should be free is it is basic necessity,” the clause needs a clearer structure and an article (“is that it is a basic necessity”). “If it is not free than…” should use “then,” and “population living in rural areas are” has a subject–verb agreement problem. There are also punctuation issues, including the comma after “Although” and the missing final full stop. Proofreading these patterns would improve accuracy.
