Student answer (Band 6.0)

Availability of clean water is a fundamental human right. Therefore every home should be supplied by water without any charge. I don't agree with this opinion.

First of all, i agree that water is a fundamental human right. So, everyone should have access to the water. However, supplying water free of cost is something which i don't agree with. My thesis is that being basic nature of something should not be the benchmark to decide whether it should be free or not. Water is very basic need but, water cleaning process is not cheap, heavy machines are operated to clean the water. This process uses electricity too so there is that cost as well. That is why i do not agree that this can be free as the process overall not cheap so that cost needs to be paid.

secondly, there are thousands of workers work in water supply department, so that is another cost. If we ask government to manage the cost that will also not work in people's interest. Because government will eventualy use tax payers money to do that. So I believe it is 100 times better if we ask people to pay for the water every month. It will not put extra burden on government and the overall balance of economy will also not be disturbed.

In conlusion, i agree that water is basic need but, It should not be free. since overall water cleaning process is not cheap, and there are other types of cost too that can not be managed easily.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you accept that clean water is a human right but disagree that household supply should be free. You support this with relevant reasons about treatment, electricity, workers and the use of taxpayers’ money, so the response addresses the task and has a sound central argument. The explanation of treatment costs is the most developed point, while the claim that charging households is “100 times better” and will protect the economy is asserted rather than demonstrated. The discussion also focuses mainly on costs and gives little consideration to how charges could affect households unable to pay. To strengthen the response further, explain the consequences of your reasons and qualify broad claims with a specific example or a practical distinction, such as a basic free allowance versus payment for higher use.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. Sequencing phrases such as “First of all,” “secondly,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and several links are expressed through repeated “so” and “that is why” constructions. The second body paragraph moves quickly from workers’ wages to government taxation and then to the economy, without fully explaining the connections. Some sentences also contain several related points joined together, which makes the progression less smooth. Use a wider range of linking and referencing, and make each paragraph develop one main reason through explanation and an example.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “fundamental human right,” “water supply,” “cleaning process,” “electricity,” and “tax payers’ money.” These choices make your main ideas understandable. However, the range is limited and some expressions are repetitive or imprecise, particularly repeated references to “cost” and “free.” Phrases such as “being basic nature of something” and “overall balance of economy” are not natural collocations, while “100 times better” is too informal and emphatic for an academic essay. There are also spelling errors, including “eventualy” and “conlusion.” Aim for more precise topic vocabulary and check spelling and collocation; this will make the argument sound more controlled and appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a conditional construction in “If we ask government to manage the cost that will also not work in people's interest.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain and occasionally make the phrasing awkward. For example, “there are thousands of workers work” needs a relative clause or a different verb structure, and “the process overall not cheap” is missing a finite verb. There are also inconsistent capitalisation and punctuation choices, such as lowercase “i” and “secondly,” and the comma in “but, water cleaning process” is unnecessary. Practise accurate clause construction, articles and verb forms, then proofread sentence boundaries and punctuation.
