Student answer (Band 6.5)

Access to clean water is an essential human right. Some people believe that every household should receive a free water supply. I completely agree with this view because water is necessary for survival, and free access can improve public health and reduce poverty.

First of all, water is essential for human life. People need clean water for drinking, cooking, bathing and cleaning their homes. if governments provide a basic amount water free of charge, every family can meet its daily needs, regardless of their financial situation. For example, poor families may struggle to pay their water bills, so free access to clean water would help them maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Secondly, providing free water can improve public health. When people cannot afford clean water, they may use unsafe sources, which can cause seriouds illnesses. As a result, governments may have to spend more money on healthcare. Therefore, ensuring that every household had access to clean water can benefit both individuals and society.

However, i believe that free water should be limited to essential daily needs. People who use excessive amounts of water should pay additional charges. This would encourage them to avoid wasting water and safe water limited use only for work.

In conclusion, i strongly agree that every household should received a basic supply of clean water free of charge. this would protect human health, support poorer families and ensure a fairer society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you agree that households should receive a basic free supply, while excessive use should incur charges. The reasons about survival, affordability and public health are relevant, and the example of poorer families helps explain the social benefit. This meets the task well, but the ideas are not equally developed: the health argument is asserted rather than illustrated, and the point about charging for excessive use needs more explanation of how this would work. The response also falls 16 words short of the required minimum. To strengthen the response further, develop each reason with a specific example or consequence and ensure the essay meets the stated length.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall progression: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs give supporting reasons, a further paragraph qualifies your position, and the conclusion restates it. Sequencing phrases such as “First of all,” “Secondly,” “However” and “In conclusion” make the structure easy to follow. This is effective organisation, though the linking is somewhat formulaic. Some connections could be made more precise: the healthcare-cost consequence follows the claim about unsafe water, but the relationship could be explained more explicitly. The final body paragraph also moves quickly from limiting free water to discouraging waste. Use a wider range of linking and referencing, and develop transitions between claims so the progression feels less dependent on signposting phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “human right,” “public health,” “unsafe sources,” “water bills” and “excessive amounts.” These choices communicate the main ideas clearly, and phrases such as “free of charge” suit the formal task. However, some wording is inaccurate or awkward, which limits precision: “safe water limited use only for work” is difficult to interpret, and “seriouds illnesses” contains a spelling error. There is also repetition of “free,” “water” and “clean water.” Aim for more accurate collocations and a few precise alternatives, such as “a basic household allocation” or “waterborne illnesses,” while checking spelling and ensuring that each phrase expresses the intended meaning naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and cause-and-effect structures: “if governments provide…” and “When people cannot afford clean water, they may use unsafe sources.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation slips are present. Examples include “a basic amount water” (missing “of”), “every household should received” (incorrect verb form), and “every household had access” where the tense does not fit the general claim. Capitalisation is also inconsistent at the starts of sentences and with “I.” To improve, check verb forms after modal verbs, maintain consistent present-tense statements for general facts, and proofread sentence openings and punctuation. These corrections would make your varied structures more controlled.
