Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some have argued that the basic human rights, particularly, clean water should be accessed and provided in every accomodation free of charge, while others think otherwise. In this essay, I partly agree that free access of clean water should be given to everyone. Generally, water is a privilage. People who are underpriviliged are struggling to survive each day due to this problem. Hence, with free access of water, diseases are less proned to be exposed. Whereas the downside of this is that it can be taken for granted.

To begin with, the availability of water to each homes without having the need to pay can have a much positive impact. People are able to use water up to their own domestic use such as cleaning or cooking. As a result, this will reduce the chances of water related diseases like cholera to outbreak as hygiene begins to improve. Hence, this would result to society having better healthcare because of good use of water.

In conrast, providing water for free can result to many individuals to take advantage of it. People would end up leaving the tap running just because they are entitled of it, and therefore would waste water. Some would argue that water can be harvested as they are natural, however, sources like the river or reservoir often has many uses, hence why this can eventually lead to the depletion of water sources.

In conclusion, i believe that there are a good side to providing free access to water as it can have great health benefits for society. However, there are a negative side to this as water would be at risk to be depleted due to people taking advantage of this. Thus, we should take careful consideration into this, regardless of the title being a basic human rights.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both the benefits and drawbacks of providing household water free of charge, and your position is clear: you partly agree. The health argument is relevant and supported by the example of cholera, while the concern about waste and pressure on water sources gives the opposing view. However, the response does not fully explain what “partly agree” means in practice—for example, whether a basic amount should be free while excessive use is charged. The claim that free water would reduce disease is also asserted rather than fully explained, and the discussion of water as a “privilege” could be connected more directly to the human-rights argument. Developing these points with clearer reasoning would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two sides, and a conclusion. The progression from health benefits to possible waste is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “To begin with,” “In contrast,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some ability to organise ideas clearly. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical, particularly through repeated “Hence” and “As a result,” and some links do not express the relationship precisely. For instance, “Hence why” is awkward in the sentence about water sources. Use a wider range of natural transitions and make the connection between each claim and its explanation more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “domestic use,” “hygiene,” “cholera,” “reservoir,” and “depletion.” These choices show an attempt to discuss both public health and resource management. However, noticeable spelling, word-form, and collocation errors limit precision: “accomodation,” “privilage,” and “proned” are inaccurate, while “free access of clean water” and “water related diseases … to outbreak” are not natural expressions. Some wording is also vague, such as “a good side” and “great health benefits.” Aim to learn common topic collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully; this would make your meaning more precise and help you use less common vocabulary more confidently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “while,” “because,” and “as,” and the main ideas remain understandable. Some sentence patterns are controlled, such as “People would end up leaving the tap running … and therefore would waste water.” However, there are some errors in agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “each homes” should use a singular noun, and “there are a good side” and “there are a negative side” do not agree in number. The opening sentence is also difficult to control, and “this would result to society having” uses an incorrect grammatical pattern. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and building complex sentences around a clear main clause.
