Student answer (Band 6.5)

One of the fundamental human rights is access to clean water. Some people argue that every homestead should be supplied with water without any charges. Others suggest that the public should contribute to the cost of the supply. While water serves a critical function in daily household operations, I strongly agree with the idea that there should be some charges to water used in homes.

On the one hand, clean water is quite fundamental to every homestead. Acess to such can lead to healthy citizens since the government will supply treated water. As a result, diseases such as cholera and typhoid will be on the decline in both children and adults. Furthermore, the poor people will have clean water all year round. For instance, in Kenya, some communities in the Northern part of the country travel long distances in such of this commodity. Free supply will ensure equality among the rich and the economically challenged.

On the other hand, supplying water to the many homesteads in a country can be an expensive task for the government. Installation of pipes and construction of dams is very expensive. The members of the public should be charged some standard fee to cater for some of these expenses. As a result, the nation will focus on other developments like construction of good roads. This charge ensures families use the water responsibly to avoid paying more since payment is pegged on the amount of water spent in a month.

In conclusion, while it is quite necessary to have clean water to minimise ailments and have a continous supply of clean water all year, I strongly agree that this should not be provided free of charge to ensure efficient usage of the recourse and also allow the government to do other developments apart from supplying water without any charges.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction onward: you argue that water should not be free, and the conclusion restates this view. You address both the importance of access to clean water and the costs of providing it, supporting these points with relevant examples such as disease prevention and communities in northern Kenya. The explanation that charges could fund pipes and dams, while encouraging responsible use, also extends your argument. To strengthen the response further, develop the balance between basic access and payment: for example, explain how a modest charge or free essential allowance could protect poorer households while helping cover supply costs. Some claims, such as the effect on other national development, would benefit from more specific explanation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs signalled by “On the one hand” and “On the other hand,” and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress logically within each paragraph, and examples are placed alongside the points they support. This gives the essay a coherent foundation. However, some links are mechanical, and the opening presents both sides before the position is expressed in a way that can momentarily seem contradictory. The conclusion also combines several points in one long sentence, making the final reasoning less easy to follow. Use clearer transitions to show how each paragraph supports your own position, and divide the conclusion into shorter, more focused clauses.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “treated water,” “installation of pipes,” “construction of dams,” and “standard fee.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning remains clear despite some inaccurate or awkward expressions. There are, however, noticeable spelling and word-choice issues: “Acess,” “continous,” and “recourse” should be corrected, while “in such of this commodity” is not a natural phrase. “Homestead” is also repeated and is less suitable than “household” in this context. To improve precision, check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for public services and water provision, rather than relying on phrases that sound translated or overly general.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, and several sentences are controlled well, such as “Installation of pipes and construction of dams is very expensive.” The conditional structure in “Free supply will ensure equality” and the cause-and-effect links also help express relationships between ideas. Some grammatical errors remain, but they do not prevent understanding. For example, “I strongly agree with the idea that there should be some charges to water used in homes” has an awkward preposition and construction; “the poor people will have clean water” would be more natural as “poor people will have access to clean water.” The final sentence is long and would be clearer if divided. Continue varying sentence forms while checking articles, prepositions, and sentence boundaries.
