Student answer (Band 6.0)

Availability of clean drinking water is a basic human requirement and should be provided in all residential places without any charges. I strongly agree that water which is basic source for sustenance of life on the earth, should be accessible to all.

Water is an important element for survival of life, inacess of which can cause several diseases and conditions; worst of which is dehydration which can result in death in severe condition. Dirty water is a common problem in many parts of the world and has caused health problems like typhoid, jaundice and skin infections. These are some of the common diseases which are caused due to contamination of drinking water and result in severe infection. For example in some countries of Africa where clean drinking water is unavailable, young children often suffer with weak bodies due to exposure to infections at a young age which delays development and growth. High cost of clean purified water is another problem for many people who cannot afford buying packaged water or buy expensive water filteration system which can be installed in homes. This forces people to rely on tap water is unclean for human consumption and can cause health problems like stomach ache and infection.

In many parts of the world, countries like Saudi Arabia, UAE, and other Gulf nations which are sourrounded by large salty waterbodies like seas and ocean and do not recieve annual rainfalls, desalination of water is a tedious task for local population, and hence rely on goverment bodies to provide fresh water for drinking. For instance, In the Thar desert area of India the people depend on water tankers sent by local authorities which arrive in villages everyday to supply clean water.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the opening: you strongly agree that clean water should be accessible to everyone. You support this with relevant points about disease, the cost of purification, and communities that depend on public water provision. The examples of children in parts of Africa and water tankers in the Thar Desert help connect the argument to real situations. The response also addresses the idea of free access, particularly through affordability, but it does not fully explain how a free household supply should be funded or why this is preferable to targeted assistance. The desalination point is relevant but its link to the central claim could be made more explicit. Developing these points and explaining the policy implications would make the argument more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a generally understandable progression: it introduces your view, explains health and affordability concerns, and then gives examples of water provision in arid regions. This overall arrangement helps the reader follow the main argument. However, the body is presented as two very long paragraphs, each containing several distinct ideas, so the shifts between health risks, household costs, desalination, and government supply are not always clearly signposted. Some links are also abrupt; for example, the move from expensive filters to Gulf countries could use a clearer transition explaining how public provision addresses affordability. Divide the discussion into focused paragraphs and use linking phrases selectively to show cause, contrast, and example. This would improve progression without making the essay feel mechanically connected.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “contamination,” “dehydration,” “desalination,” and “local authorities,” which allows you to discuss health, cost, and water supply. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “water tankers” and “water filtration system.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however, including “basic human requirement,” “suffer with weak bodies,” and “salty waterbodies.” Spelling errors such as “inacess,” “filteration,” “sourrounded,” and “recieve” also reduce accuracy, although the intended meaning is generally clear. Aim for more natural combinations and check spelling carefully; precise vocabulary will make the argument sound more fluent and credible.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “water which is basic source for sustenance” and a longer conditional explanation of the effects of dehydration. Meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors occur in articles, sentence construction, and punctuation. For example, “water which is basic source” needs an article, while “This forces people to rely on tap water is unclean” has an incomplete grammatical link between the clauses. The long sentence beginning “In many parts of the world” is difficult to control and contains several ideas joined together. Use shorter sentences where needed, check that each clause has a clear grammatical connection, and review articles and sentence boundaries. More consistent accuracy would strengthen your range.
