Student answer (Band 6.5)

Clean water is a basic necessity of everybodys life. While i agree that government should provide this basic necessity to all people without any financial burden. I disagree with this notion that it should be provided free of charge to people.

Clean water is important to maintain healthy life of people. As drinking contaminated water may lead to various waterborne diseases including diarrhea, typhoid, cholera etc. Many of these diseases increase the burden on countrys economic system. This ultimately leads to surge in patient toll, and burdens the low income households specifically those who hardly make both ends meet. Thus unavailability of clean water not only burdens the individual households but also the healthcare systems.

On the other hand, providing water free of cost to people might lead to increase in its wastage. Anything thats provided free of cost to people loses its value and people never understand the importance of water. So the government should impose acceptable and valid charges on water that would support the significance and value of clean water, simultaneously fulfilling the necessity of life. Moreover, this money can help in maintaining the water treatment system.

A tiered pricing system should be imposed on water. Under this every household, recieves generous amount of water needed for basic necessities as cooking, cleaning and drinking whereas any use crossing this would have charges imposed.

In conclusion, clean water is a basic human right that helps people to lead a healthy life but giving this water free of charge might lead to its wastage so a balanced system should be maintained between social fairness and resource conservation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the opening: you support government provision of clean water but oppose making all consumption free. You address the main issue with relevant reasons, including health risks from contaminated water, pressure on healthcare and household finances, and the possibility of waste. The proposal for a tiered system also gives your argument a practical direction. These ideas are generally extended and supported, which makes the response persuasive. To strengthen it further, develop the pricing proposal with a specific explanation of how charges would protect low-income households or discourage excessive use. The claim that free goods lose their value is quite broad; qualify it or support it with a concrete example so the reasoning is more fully convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall progression: it introduces your position, explains the health and economic importance of clean water, presents the concern about free provision, proposes tiered pricing, and concludes by restating the balance you favour. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and signposts such as “On the other hand,” “Moreover,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. The links are generally effective, though some transitions feel formulaic, and the relationship between the claim about wastage and the proposed tiered system could be made more explicit. For example, explain directly how charging only for use beyond basic needs would reduce waste while preserving access. Also ensure that sentences within paragraphs connect smoothly rather than relying mainly on linking phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “waterborne diseases,” “contaminated water,” “healthcare systems,” “tiered pricing system,” and “resource conservation.” These choices communicate the main ideas and show some awareness of more formal academic language. There are also several imprecise or unnatural expressions that limit flexibility and precision: “patient toll” is not the usual phrase for the number of patients, “surge in” is awkward in this context, and “generous amount” does not clearly describe a sufficient basic allocation. Spelling and word-form slips such as “everybodys” and “countrys” also affect accuracy. Aim for more natural collocations and precise phrasing, especially when describing economic effects and household water allowances.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including the contrast in “While I agree … I disagree” and the conditional idea that free provision “might lead to” wastage. Meaning remains clear overall, but some grammatical and punctuation errors recur. The opening “While I agree that government should provide…” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence fragment before the next sentence; combine the ideas into one complete sentence. In “Anything thats provided … loses,” the relative clause needs an apostrophe in “that’s,” and the sentence beginning “As drinking contaminated water…” is also a fragment. There are further issues with articles and agreement, such as “maintain healthy life” and “every household, recieves.” Review sentence boundaries, articles, and subject–verb forms to improve control while retaining your complex structures.
