Student answer (Band 6.0)

Clean water plays a vital role in our lives, since we can't live without it. Access to clean water is a basic human right. Some people argue that every home should have a water supply free of charge. I strongly agree with this statement due to the importance of water which I'm going to explain in this essay.

On the one hand, since the beginning of time water plays a crucial role for every individual and every society. The presence of water in a certain area led for the birth of civilizations like ancient Egypt and ancient Mesopotamia leading to thriving agriculture and settlement for ancient populations; therfore water is something so basic but lead to major achievements. Having water helped people in their daily lives in many aspects. With the access to clean water, they could drink, eat, and bath. Analysts did a study on a group of people and found out that 95% don't support to be charged for water. They also argue that it is the responsibility of the governments to ensure that every citizen has access to a clean water supply funded by their taxes.

On the other hand, some argue that the process of delivering a clean water supply to every home is expensive, especially today, since water is a lot cleaner and populations are higher in numbers. The maintenance of the supplies and pipes is also expensive, so the charge isn't about water itself, it's about the process of handling and filtering water reaching a suitable condition to be considered clean according to the World Health Organization standards.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that it is the responsibility of every government around the world to ensure the access to clean water, because people pay a lot of taxes, because something like clean water in the modern world is considered a basic human right and not something special.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction (“I strongly agree”) and remains consistent in the conclusion. You address the central issue by arguing that clean water is essential and that governments should ensure access, while also acknowledging the cost of treatment and delivery. These are relevant points, but they are not equally developed: the historical examples of Egypt and Mesopotamia show water’s importance, rather than explaining why household supplies should be free today. The claim about 95% of people is also unsupported and does not add much reasoning. To strengthen the response, explain more directly how free provision protects people who cannot afford water, and clarify whether you mean water itself or the infrastructure and treatment should be publicly funded. The response contains 9 words copied from the task prompt, which were not counted.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs signposted by “On the one hand” and “On the other hand,” and a conclusion. The reader can follow the overall movement from the importance of water to the cost of supplying it and then to your position. However, the first body paragraph combines historical examples, daily uses, an unexplained survey, and government responsibility, so its progression is not always clear. The contrast between the two body paragraphs is also somewhat mechanical, and the conclusion repeats the main claim without drawing the arguments together. Group related points more tightly and use clearer links to show how each example supports your view.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “basic human right,” “thriving agriculture,” “maintenance,” “filtering,” and “standards.” These choices help communicate the subject and show some willingness to use less common terms. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, however: “led for the birth” and “don't support to be charged” are not natural expressions, while “water is a lot cleaner” does not clearly convey the intended point about treatment standards. There is also a spelling error in “therfore.” Aim for more precise phrasing and check collocations, especially when describing public funding and water infrastructure. This would make the argument sound more controlled without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “since,” “especially,” and “because.” Most of the meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “water plays a crucial role” needs a past-tense form to match “since the beginning of time,” and “the presence of water … led for the birth” has an incorrect preposition and article pattern. In “they could drink, eat, and bath,” the final verb form is not parallel with the others. The conclusion also repeats “because” in a way that makes the sentence structure awkward. Review tense consistency, verb patterns, and sentence boundaries, while continuing to use a range of clause structures.
