Student answer (Band 6.5)

Access to potable water is a fundamental human right, so, every household should have water supply at no cost. I strongly agree with this statement because water is essential to public health and it reduces the burden and cost on families when made free.

It is the responsibility of the government to provide water for it citizens as it is their fundamental right. Access to clean, safe and potable water is of a great significant to the public health, the health of a community is directly proportional to the water they take. Most diseases are water-borne for example typhoid, cholera and dysentery and these diseases are always endemic in countries where access to good water is scarce especially developing countries and rural areas. Hence, it is the role of the government to provide safe water, this will help increase life expentancy and increase productivity of the citizens because people are healthy and this will increase the internal generated revenue.

Furthermore, when water is made free the burden of getting water is lessen on the populace, money that would be used to get water will easily be invested in other things that will yield more gain. For example, in Nigeria where most people are from lower class strata of the society and could not afford basic needs, when water is being catered for by government they will have other things to do like paying children school fees, the cost of getting water is high. I do spend more than 10% of my salary on water bills, and I do feel the impact on my income, if water is made, my burdens will be lightened.

In conclusion, access to safe water is a right and I agree that government should make water accessible and free because water is essential to public health and it reduces the financial burden and cost on families when made free.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you agree that water should be free, and you give two relevant reasons—protecting public health and easing household costs. The examples of water-borne illnesses and your experience of spending part of your salary on water help support these points. You also explain some wider effects, such as improved productivity and families being able to pay school fees. To strengthen the response further, develop the reasoning behind these claims more precisely. For instance, explain how free provision would ensure reliable access for poorer households, and qualify broad statements such as “Most diseases are water-borne,” which are not sufficiently supported. The response addresses the task clearly, though some claims are more fully explained than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and the conclusion restates your position. The progression from public health to financial relief is logical, and signposts such as “Furthermore” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. Within paragraphs, however, some links are less controlled. In the first body paragraph, several claims about disease, life expectancy, productivity and revenue are joined in a long sequence, so the relationship between them could be made clearer. The repeated use of “this will” also makes the progression somewhat mechanical. Use more precise referencing and vary transitions—for example, explicitly connect improved health to productivity—while keeping each paragraph focused on one main line of reasoning.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “potable water,” “water-borne,” “public health,” “life expectancy” and “financial burden.” These choices show an effort to use more specific language, and the meaning is generally clear. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “of a great significant” should be “of great significance,” “internal generated revenue” is not idiomatic, and “lower class strata” is awkward. There are also spelling errors such as “expentancy.” Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than adding formality for its own sake. More precise terms such as “government revenue,” “low-income households” and “water bills” would make the argument clearer and more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including reason clauses with “because,” conditional phrasing such as “when water is made free,” and a relative clause in “money that would be used to get water.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “for it citizens” needs a possessive form, “the health of a community is directly proportional to the water they take” has an unclear pronoun reference, and “the burden … is lessen” has an incorrect verb form. Several sentences also run together, particularly the sentence beginning “Hence, it is the role of the government,” where a full stop or semicolon would clarify the structure. Check agreement, articles and sentence boundaries, while continuing to use varied sentence patterns.
