Student answer (Band 6.0)

In my opinion, clean water is a basic need for every human being. I agree that everyone should have access to clean water. However I believe that providing free water isn’t the best solution.

Firstly ,water is our basic necessity ,it means that water is used in our daily life like in drinking, washing, cooking, bathing, cleaning and many other things. Without water there won’t be a single living thing alive in planet earth. And also without clean water people can suffer from many diseases. For example, if people will drink dirty water may get diseases. Poor families may not be able to afford clean water every day. Therefore, the government should provide free fresh water those who are in need and who couldn’t afford.

Secondly, If the government gave these poor people free fresh water they could save up the money and use it for paying school or college fees and other basic necessities. For example, a low income family may find it difficult to pay the water bills every month. Free access to the fresh free water can save up many lives from various diseases and live healthier.

On the other hand, Giving up to many fresh water to people can lead to water wastage. Some people may leave taps running or use too much water because they do not have to pay for it. This can create water shortages in the future. For example, during summer, many cities face a shortage of water because of low rainfall and high demand. Therefore, people should be encouraged to use water carefully.

In the conclusion, I believe everyone should get basic clean water for free. People who use extra water should pay for it to prevent wastage.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you support free access to basic clean water, but argue that people should pay for extra use. You address both the benefits for low-income families and the risk of waste, and the examples about water bills and summer shortages are relevant. This gives the response a sound answer to the question. However, the distinction between a free basic supply and paid additional use appears most clearly in the conclusion; explaining this policy in the introduction would make your position more fully developed. Some points also need further explanation—for instance, how free provision would be targeted to people in need, and how much water should count as basic. The ideas are relevant, but their development is uneven.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the benefits and drawbacks, and a conclusion that returns to your position. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “On the other hand” help readers follow the argument. However, some linking is mechanical, and the first two body paragraphs overlap: both focus on poor families receiving free water and the benefits this brings. The transition from the general importance of water to the proposal for government support could also be made more explicit. Improve progression by giving each paragraph a distinct purpose—for example, one on the basic right and targeted provision, and another on conservation and charging for excess use—and use clearer references to connect ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to discuss the topic, including relevant terms such as “water shortages,” “low income family,” “water bills,” and “basic necessities.” These choices make your main points understandable. However, several phrases are repetitive or imprecise, particularly repeated uses of “fresh water” and “free water.” Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “save up the money” and “Giving up to many fresh water.” More precise topic vocabulary would help you express the policy and its effects clearly: for example, distinguish a “basic household allowance” from “excess consumption,” and refer to “water conservation.” Check word forms and spelling as well, including “too many” rather than “to many.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “If the government gave these poor people free fresh water, they could save up the money” and a contrast introduced by “On the other hand.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are noticeable. For example, “if people will drink dirty water may get diseases” has an incomplete structure and an unsuitable conditional form; write “if people drink dirty water, they may become ill.” In “the government should provide free fresh water those who are in need,” the recipient needs a preposition (“to those”). Review sentence boundaries and comma spacing, and avoid capitalising “Giving” after a comma. Greater control of these patterns would make the response smoother.
