IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Access to clean water is a basic human right. Therefore every home should have a water supply that is provided free of charge.

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

These days some people seem to argue that every home should have a free water supply. On the other hand, others are of the opinion that water supply should not be provided free of cost. However, I agree, to a great extent, with the idea that it is beneficial for most houses to get water at no cost. There are certain reasons for my opinion which I wish to highlight in this essay.

In the first place, it would be quite true to say that free of charge water supply is good for those who cannot afford clean water. For example, if someone is financially unstable and it is difficult for him to buy clean water then giving free of cost water supply will financially help him a lot. Another reason of this side of the view is that most of the people drink without checking if the water is safe for drinking or not. For instance, they usually drink contaminated water and drinking the same water cost them their health and they blame other reasons for their illness.

Yet there is a dark side of the view which advocates that people could waste water if they don't have to pay for it. For example, If the government provides free water supply then some people who are carelessly wasting water everyday, waste more water than usual. In addition to this, other negative element, playing a significant role may be providing free water can place the financial burden on government. For example, Clearing, treating and supplying to the home can cost an arm and a leg to government because they are not getting anything in return.

To put it in a nutshell, it is indeed a debatable issue which needs further discussion and analysis. However, in the light of the above-discussed arguments and examples it would be quite safe to conclude that the advantages of providing safe drinking water free of cost outweigh its disadvantages in many aspects and far outweigh the opinion to charge for water.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you agree to a great extent that households should receive water without charge, and you address both the benefits and a counterargument. The points about affordability and the health risks of contaminated water are relevant, as are concerns about waste and government costs. However, some ideas are not fully explained. The health example, for instance, says people blame other causes for illness but does not show how free provision would ensure safe water. The cost argument also needs a clearer response explaining why public funding is justified or how a basic free allowance could work. Develop these links and make your final position more directly answer whether every home should receive a free supply.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting free water, a paragraph presenting drawbacks, and a conclusion. Sequencing is easy to follow, and signposts such as “In the first place,” “Yet,” and “To put it in a nutshell” help readers recognise the stages of the argument. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and also shows some effective progression. However, several transitions feel formulaic, and the conclusion introduces the idea that the advantages “far outweigh” charging without clearly resolving the government-cost concern raised immediately before it. Some references, such as “this side of the view,” are vague. Use more precise links between claims and explanations, and make the conclusion explicitly weigh the counterargument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to discuss the topic and attempt some less common expressions, including “financially unstable,” “contaminated water,” and “financial burden.” Meaning is generally understandable, but noticeable word-choice and collocation problems limit precision. “Free of charge water supply” is awkward, “another reason of this side of the view” is unnatural, and “other negative element” does not fit the sentence well. The idiom “cost an arm and a leg” is also too informal for this academic argument. Aim for more natural topic-specific combinations and avoid repeating “free,” “water supply,” and “for example.” More precise phrasing would make the argument clearer and more appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “if someone is financially unstable” and “if the government provides free water supply.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “giving free of cost water supply will financially help him” has an awkward sentence pattern, while “Clearing, treating and supplying to the home can cost” has an unclear subject and structure. There are also punctuation and capitalisation slips, such as “For instance, If” and “everyday” where the sentence requires “every day.” Work on building accurate clauses around your examples, checking articles and prepositions, and proofreading sentence boundaries and punctuation. Greater control would make your varied structures more effective.
