Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, there has been a huge increase in the number of debates about every home should have a water supply for free. I disagree with this view since not only the maintenance fee, but also prevention from overuse water.

First, there is a point to be made that clean water is not free to maintain. For example, the goverment should install facilities to clean water and pay for hiring staff to work there and offering electronic to opperate. For this reason, it is evident that the government need budget for that. Morevoer, the government should keep fixing old pipe from the facilities storing water to each home. It generates extra fee. This is the main reason that clean water should not be free of charge.

In addition to this, it must be stated that there are possibility that people might overuse water if it is free. For instance, people tend to overuse public supplies because that is free. However, nowadays, clean water is not getting enough so it can not being overuse. Therefore, it is clear that there are needs to restric to use water. Furthermore, if water is not provided free, individuals starts thinking of saving water. With this in mind, it is clear that water should be charged.

To conclude, the overwhelming evidence seems to suggest extra charge for water to maintain clean water and prevent from overuse of water.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you disagree with free household water, and you give two relevant reasons—maintenance costs and the risk of overuse. The examples about treatment facilities, staff and pipes help explain the first point. However, the second argument is less clearly developed: the claim that people overuse public supplies because they are free is not explained or supported, and “clean water is not getting enough” is difficult to interpret. The response therefore addresses the question but develops its ideas unevenly. It also contains 234 words, below the required 250, so there is limited space to explain the reasoning fully. Develop each point with a clearer cause-and-effect explanation or a specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion that restates your view. Sequencing phrases such as “First,” “In addition to this,” and “To conclude” make the progression easy to follow. This organisation is a strength, and the main ideas are generally grouped appropriately. To make the flow more natural, reduce formulaic transitions and connect claims more explicitly. For example, “However, nowadays, clean water is not getting enough so it can not being overuse” does not clearly show how it relates to the preceding example. Clarifying that relationship and using pronouns or linking phrases with precise references would strengthen cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “maintenance,” “facilities,” “overuse,” “public supplies,” and “saving water,” which allows you to discuss both cost and conservation. There is also some attempt to use more formal phrasing, such as “the overwhelming evidence seems to suggest.” However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or repetitive, and several errors make parts of the argument harder to understand. Examples include “prevention from overuse water,” “offering electronic,” and “extra fee.” Spelling errors such as “goverment,” “opperate,” and “Morevoer” also affect accuracy. Build a more reliable range of phrases for water treatment, infrastructure costs and conservation, and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex structures, including “since not only … but also …” and the conditional idea “if it is free.” The paragraphing also gives you opportunities to develop different sentence patterns. However, complex constructions are often faulty, and errors in agreement, verb forms and sentence structure sometimes obscure meaning. For example, “the government need budget” lacks correct agreement and a clear article or determiner, while “it can not being overuse” has an incorrect verb form. “There are possibility” and “individuals starts” also show problems with number agreement. Practise building accurate clauses first, then combine them; pay particular attention to subject–verb agreement and verb forms after modal verbs.
