Student answer (Band 6.5)

Hygienic water is a primary human necessity; thus everyone should have access to clean water, without any charges. I totally agree with the fact that government should provide required facilities at houses to ensure that every person has access to clean water.

Water resources, such as rivers, ponds and lakes, used to have water fit for human consumption in the past, but that is not the case anymore. Disposal of human wastes, chemicals, and other harmful substances in the water bodies have lead to a decline in the quality of water found in them. In addition, they have become a breeding ground of several diseases and have become totally unusable for human needs. It is the responsibility of the government to step up and take the required measures to improve the situation of water resources in the nation.

Moreover, poor people mostly depend on the free unclean water resources available nearby, which has contributed to a rise in the health issues and the spread of various diseases in their communities. In order to avoid such issues, free water should be provided at every house in the country. This would definitely lead to an increase in the health index as well. Furthermore, water coolers should be installed within every few kilometers; this would ensure that every person has access to drinkable water even when they are away from their homes.

In conclusion, I believe that access to clean water is a fundamental human right and providing water to every citizen is a basic duty of the government, therefore every home should have a completely free supply of clean water.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction—“I totally agree”—and remains consistent in the conclusion. You give relevant reasons, including pollution of natural water sources and the health risks faced by poorer communities, and you propose household supplies and public water coolers. This addresses the task, but the argument is not equally developed throughout: the claim that free household water would improve the “health index” is asserted rather than explained, and the water-cooler proposal is not clearly connected to the claim that every home should receive a free supply. To strengthen the response, explain how the government could fund and maintain free provision, and develop one or two examples showing why this policy is necessary and workable.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons and proposals, and a conclusion restates your position. Linking expressions such as “In addition,” “Moreover,” and “Furthermore” help signal the progression. However, some connections feel mechanical, and the relationship between ideas is not always fully clear. For example, the paragraph moves from poor people using unsafe water to free household supplies, then to water coolers for people away from home, without explaining how these proposals fit together as one policy. The conclusion also joins two complete ideas with “therefore” in a way that would benefit from clearer punctuation or a separate sentence. Use more explicit links between claims and explanations.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “human consumption,” “water resources,” “harmful substances,” and “breeding ground,” which helps communicate the environmental and health concerns. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “fundamental human right” and “responsibility of the government.” Some choices are imprecise or unnatural, however: “hygienic water” is less suitable than “clean” or “safe drinking water,” “health index” is vague in this context, and “free unclean water resources” is confusing. “Have lead to” also contains a word-form error, which affects lexical accuracy. Aim for precise collocations and avoid formal-sounding phrases unless their meaning is clear.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including the contrast in “used to have … but that is not the case anymore” and the purpose clause “In order to avoid such issues.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and the response shows some control of longer sentence forms. Some grammatical errors remain. In “have lead to a decline,” the past participle should be “led”; “government should provide” needs an article or plural form (“the government”); and the final sentence joins two independent clauses with “therefore” without suitable punctuation. There is also a slightly awkward construction in “water coolers should be installed within every few kilometers.” Review articles, verb forms, and punctuation in compound sentences to improve accuracy while retaining your varied structures.
