Student answer (Band 6.0)
Water is a basic need for human survival therefore; many people believe that clean water should be provided to them for free by the government. I dont agree to this view because water is a valuable resource, providing it for free will reduce its worth and people will waste it instead of saving it.
Firstly, if clean water is provided to people for no charge by the government, they would not value the water as they should. They will use it excessively and waste it. For example, people will take shower for extended periods. They will use the clean water to wash cars or garages, which in future can lead to the shortage of water as many countries have very less sources of clean water supplies. Increased usage of water also means that areas with less water supply would be affected as shortage of water means no water for them.
Secondly, clean water is achieved through filter plants that removes the impurities of the water and make it clean.
Filter plants uses machines that are very costly and often requires maintainance, which means the filter plants need
huge amount of money to continue its operations . If water is provided for free, these filter plants will not sustain the heavy cost and will eventually shut down. As a result people will no longer recieve clean water at their homes, which would ultimately lead to people spending more money buying the water from other sources.
In conclusion, clean water should be avaliable for every home; however it should include a cost or some charge in order for people to know its worth, as clean water itself is very limited and achieved through a costly process.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction: you disagree with free household water because it may encourage waste and undermine the funding of treatment. Both reasons are relevant, and the examples of long showers and washing cars help illustrate the first. The explanation of treatment costs also supports your view, and the conclusion restates it. This meets the task well, with some elements developed more fully than others: the first argument is illustrated, while the second would benefit from a more explicit explanation of how household charges fund treatment and maintain reliable access. To strengthen the response further, acknowledge the human-rights concern in the prompt and clarify whether you oppose all free provision or support a basic free allowance with charges for higher use.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion. The sequence is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “In conclusion” make the organisation explicit. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and some links between ideas need clearer wording. For instance, the move from excessive use to the effect on areas with less water is understandable but could explain the connection more directly. The second body paragraph also begins with a description of filter plants before linking their costs to household charges. Use referencing and transitions more precisely, and organise each paragraph around a clear claim followed by explanation and evidence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your argument, including “valuable resource,” “shortage of water,” “impurities,” and “operations.” These choices show some range beyond basic everyday language. However, several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, such as “very less sources,” “for no charge,” and “huge amount of money,” and repetition of “clean water” and “water” limits flexibility. There are also spelling errors, including “maintainance,” “recieve,” and “avaliable,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise collocations and vary repeated terms where appropriate—for example, refer to “water treatment facilities” or “household water use.” Proofreading spelling and choosing natural expressions would make the argument clearer and more polished.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “If clean water is provided … they would not value the water” and a result clause beginning “As a result.” Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. The opening sentence incorrectly joins clauses with “therefore;”, and “Filter plants that removes” and “Filter plants uses” show subject–verb agreement problems. There are also issues with articles and number, as in “take shower” and “huge amount of money,” and the final sentence is long and awkwardly joined. Practise accurate agreement and article use, and divide or punctuate longer sentences carefully. Greater control of these forms would support your attempts at complex structures.
