Student answer (Band 6.5)

Access to clean water is one of most important basic human rights. Some people believe that every household should receive a free water supply. I partly agree with this opinion because everyone deserves access to safe drinking water, although I believe that excessive water consumption should be paid for.

Firstly, clear water is essential for human survival and good health. People need it for drinking, cooking, washing, and maintaining personal hygiene. Unfortunately, many poor families cannot afford regular access to clean water. As a result, they many use unsafe water source, which can cause serious diseases. Therefore, government should ensure that every household receives a basic amount of clean water without charge. This would reduce health problems and improve people's quality of life.

Secondly, providing free water can help reduce poverty and inequality. In many developing countries, low income families spend a considerable part if their earnings on basic necessities. If governments provide free water for essential daily needs, families will have more money to spend on education, food and healthcare. Moreover, equal access to clean water would create a healthier and fairfer society.

However,I do not believe that unlimited water should be provided free of charge. water is a valuable natural resources, and excessive consumption can lead to shortages. if people do not have to pay anything, they may waste water necessarily. Governments should therefore introduce a system in which a reasonable amount is free, while additional consumption is changed at an affordable rate. this would encourage people to use water responsible.

In conclusion, I believe that every household should receive a free basic supply of clean water because it is essential for human life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you partly agree, supporting free access to essential water while arguing that excess use should be charged. You address both sides of the proposal and give relevant reasons, including health, poverty, inequality, and conservation. The examples about unsafe water and household spending help extend your argument, and the proposed basic allowance with charges for additional use is a practical response. This fits a response that addresses the task and supports its main ideas. To strengthen development further, explain more specifically how a government could define a reasonable free allowance or ensure that the policy reaches households most in need. The conclusion restates your central view but could also briefly reinforce the limit on free consumption.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two paragraphs supporting free essential water, a contrasting paragraph on unlimited use, and a conclusion. The progression from human need to social benefits and then conservation is logical. Linking expressions such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “However,” and “therefore” make the relationships between points easy to follow. This coherent arrangement meets the lower-band expectations, and the clear progression shows some features of stronger cohesion. However, the connectors are somewhat formulaic, and some sentences within paragraphs read as a sequence of separate claims rather than a fully connected explanation. Use pronouns or phrases such as “this provision” to link back to the policy, and develop transitions between evidence and its consequences more smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “human survival,” “personal hygiene,” “poverty and inequality,” “natural resources,” and “shortages.” These choices communicate the main ideas clearly, and phrases such as “a basic amount” and “additional consumption” help express your proposed policy. There are also some inaccurate word choices and spelling errors that keep the vocabulary from being consistently precise: “they many use unsafe water source,” “fairfer society,” and “waste water necessarily” appear to be intended as “they may use unsafe water sources,” “fairer society,” and “waste water unnecessarily.” “Changed at an affordable rate” is also not the intended expression for a fee. Proofread carefully and focus on accurate collocations and word forms when using less common vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a reason clause (“because everyone deserves access”) and a conditional sentence (“If governments provide free water… families will have more money”). These structures help express relationships between ideas, and the overall meaning remains understandable. However, some grammatical errors occur across the response. For example, “one of most important basic human rights” needs an article, “government should ensure” needs an appropriate determiner or plural form, and “they many use” contains an incorrect modal form. There are also errors in agreement and sentence-initial capitalization, such as “water is a valuable natural resources” and “if people.” Check articles, singular/plural agreement, and capitalization, then proofread each sentence for accuracy. Greater control of these basics would make your varied sentence forms more effective.
