Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is often argued by some people that access to clean water is a basic human right and therefore every home should have a free access to pure drinking water free of cost. although some may disagree with this notion, however I completely agree with the idea of providing pure water to every home without any cost. Not only because it is required for household or survival, but clean water is a foundation of healthy life.

There are many benefits associated with it, most prominent among them are related to health. For example, if everyone has the free access to pure water, all the consumers will be safe from waterborne diseases, children and infants will live a healthy life. In addition to this, it will also prevent the cost of visiting hospitals to cure the diseases caused by drinking dirty water.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

Your position is clear: you completely agree that every home should receive clean water without charge, and you give relevant health-related reasons, including preventing waterborne diseases and reducing hospital visits. However, the response addresses the task only minimally because it is substantially below the required length: it contains 132 words, 118 short of the 250-word minimum, and nine words copied from the prompt were not counted. As a result, the argument is not developed: there is no discussion of how free provision could be funded, possible objections, or a specific example to support your claims. To strengthen the response, explain each reason in more detail and add another developed point before concluding.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable progression: it introduces your agreement and then gives health benefits, with “For example” and “In addition to this” signalling supporting points. This provides some organisation and helps the reader follow the main argument. However, the essay is very short and consists of only an introduction and one body paragraph, so there is no developed overall progression or conclusion. Some linking is also mechanical: “although” and “however” are used together to introduce the same contrast, and the opening sentence is difficult to follow because several ideas are packed into it. Organise the response into clear paragraphs for the position, separate supporting reasons, and a conclusion, using links only where they clarify the relationship between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “basic human right,” “waterborne diseases,” “infants,” and “survival,” which makes the subject clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “most prominent among them.” However, several expressions are repetitive or imprecise: “pure water” and “free” recur, while “free access” and “free of cost” are awkward in this context. “Prevent the cost of visiting hospitals” does not express the intended idea naturally. Broaden your vocabulary by using precise alternatives such as “safe drinking water,” “provided at no charge,” and “reduce healthcare costs.” More developed discussion would also give you opportunities to demonstrate a wider range of accurate topic-specific language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of sentence forms, including a conditional sentence beginning “if everyone has…” and a complex sentence with “In addition to this.” The main meaning is generally understandable, but errors in sentence construction and punctuation remain. The opening has a fragment: “Not only because it is required for household or survival” is not a complete sentence, and “although” should not be followed by “however” in the same construction. The sentence beginning “There are many benefits” also has a comma splice before “most prominent among them.” Capitalisation is inconsistent after the full stop before “although.” Aim to make each sentence complete, use one clear contrast structure at a time, and check punctuation and capital letters when editing.
