Student answer (Band 5.5)
An increasing concern for many people around the world is access to clean water. Many people believe that governments should provide clean water without charging individuals because clean water is a basic human right. I firmly agree that governments should provide clean water to every houshold free of charge. In this essay, i will explain why providing clean water free of charge is essential for all human well-being.
In general, there are several reasons why people believe that the consumption of clean water is essential for human health. In many countries in Asia and Africa , people may not be as wealthy as those in Europe and America. As a result their residents might not be able to afford the cost of clean water, particularly those who live in rural areas, which can lead to various health issues such as diarrhoea; therefore, governments should pay attention to how to supply clean water without charging people.
A futher opinion for supporting this idea is that accessiable clean water could help children's education. This is beacuse if there is no charge to consume clean water means it will be available for everyone. Threfore children may performs well academics, as cunsuming clean water constantly may reduce mental stress, help to develope cognitive fuctions as well as help

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
Your position is clear: you firmly agree that governments should provide clean water free of charge, and you give relevant reasons concerning health and children’s education. The health paragraph explains how affordability can affect poorer and rural communities, with diarrhoea as a relevant consequence. However, the education point is only briefly introduced and its explanation is incomplete; the response ends mid-sentence after “help to develop cognitive functions as well as help”. The essay therefore addresses the question only partially, with ideas that remain limited and under-developed. It also contains 214 words, below the required 250. Develop each reason with a complete explanation or example, and add a conclusion that restates your position.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph about health, and a second paragraph introducing education. Linking phrases such as “As a result” and “therefore” help show relationships between ideas. However, progression is limited because the second body paragraph is unfinished, and there is no concluding paragraph to bring the argument together. Some connections are also awkward or repetitive: “therefore” appears close together in the health paragraph, while “This is because if…” does not clearly connect the claim to its explanation. Organise each paragraph around one fully developed reason, use linking expressions selectively, and finish with a conclusion so the essay has a clearer overall progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “basic human right”, “rural areas”, “health issues” and “cognitive functions”, which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “consumption” and “mental stress”. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “houshold”, “futher”, “accessiable”, “beacuse” and “cunsuming”. Some expressions are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “the consumption of clean water is essential” and “perform well academics”. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the general argument, but they limit precision. Proofread spelling and choose natural collocations, for example, “perform well academically” and “access to safe drinking water”.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms. For example, the health paragraph uses a conditional relationship in “As a result their residents might not be able to afford…”, and you connect consequences with “which can lead to…”. However, several grammatical errors affect accuracy. In “This is because if there is no charge… means”, the clause structure is incomplete and needs restructuring; “children may performs” has incorrect verb agreement after a modal, and “i” should be capitalised. The final sentence is unfinished, so its structure cannot be completed. Use a clear subject and verb in each clause, check verb forms after modals, and punctuate longer sentences carefully. More accurate complex sentences would strengthen the response.
