Student answer (Band 6.5)

Free supply of clean water should be provided to every household in the local neighbourhood as it is considered to be a basic human right. Few people would argue that this can cause many challenges such as excessive use by some people that leads to a shortage in the supply while others are of the view that this should be a part of local government's responsibility to provide and ensure the availability due to very less population being able to afford. I strongly agree that this should be provided free of charge as this is a fundamental human right.

Admittedly, the consumption of water in industries or commercial sector is a lot and if a shared reservoir is being used to deliver, this can lead to a shortage. For instance, Karachi, the business capital of Pakistan, has a water shortage problem due to a vast majority of commercial developments.

However, I strongly believe that if residents are left to bear the load of this responsibilty due to the unavailability then only few can support it financially while others would struggle. It has been noticed that due to a large demand, water prices have gone up and people nowadays find it difficult to afford clean water.

Furthermore, it can not be categorized under the luxuries, it is a fundamental right of every living being and should be an elected government's responsibility to provide. Tubewellls should be built to support the citizens as the tax is deducted every year for a clean water accessibility.

In conclusion, it is considered to be a right of every human being that they should have access to the clean water round-the-clock at no charges. Despite the fact that supply at no charge can lead to some people consuming excessive water, I strongly agree that this should be provided by the managing authorities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you agree that households should receive clean water without charge, while acknowledging the risk of excessive consumption. The discussion of affordability and government responsibility is relevant, and the Karachi example gives some support to the concern about demand. However, the argument is not developed evenly. The commercial-use point is introduced as a counterargument but its connection to free household supply is not fully explained, and the claim that few residents can afford water would benefit from a specific explanation or example. To strengthen the response, explain how free provision could be funded and managed while discouraging waste, so the main ideas are more fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the counterargument and your reasons, and a conclusion that restates your view. Linking phrases such as “Admittedly,” “However,” and “Furthermore” help signal the direction of the argument. Some connections are less clear or feel mechanical, though. For example, the shift from commercial water use to household shortages needs a more explicit explanation, and “this” in “this can lead to a shortage” could refer more precisely to the shared reservoir or the level of consumption. The conclusion repeats the central claim but adds little synthesis. Use clearer references and connect each paragraph’s point directly to your position to make progression more consistently smooth.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “fundamental human right,” “shared reservoir,” “commercial developments,” and “water prices.” These choices make the subject clear, and you attempt more formal expressions. Some collocations and word choices are inaccurate or awkward, however: “very less population being able to afford,” “bear the load of this responsibility,” and “clean water accessibility” do not sound natural in context. There are also spelling errors such as “responsibilty” and “Tubewellls.” Aim for precise, conventional phrasing and check spelling carefully. For instance, “a small proportion of the population can afford it” and “access to clean water” would express your intended meanings more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in “Despite the fact that supply at no charge can lead…” and a conditional structure beginning “if residents are left to bear…”. Meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. In “Few people would argue that this can cause,” the intended relationship between the claim and the following contrast is unclear; “while others are of the view” also creates an awkwardly joined sentence. Other examples include “it can not be categorized under the luxuries” and “the tax is deducted every year for a clean water accessibility,” where sentence construction and article use need attention. Practise building shorter, clearly connected clauses, then check articles, agreement, and punctuation in longer sentences.
