Student answer (Band 6.5)

Access to clean and safe water is a fundamental human necessity, it has been widely argued about weather or not the water should be supplied to every home free of cost. Although I do agree that clean water access is a basic human right but I do not completely agree to it being free of cost, there should be a nomial charge.

Water is an essential resource for human survival, and yet millions of people are struggling around the world. Agreeing that water is a fundamental right for us, we should not be taking it for granted. It is concerning how people still do not follow the necessary regulations for the water conservation, and if things still keep going the same way it is not far away from facing issues like water scarcity.

A few days ago, in my vicinity when I went out for a stroll, I couldn not hep but notice the water faucet was kept open and when I enquired with the security they casually said that's dirty water so need not worry. This is exact attitude that needs to be fixed. Therefore, charging a nominal fee can encourage responsible comsumption and support infrastructure maintainance.

Overall, while access to clean drinking water should be guaranteed to every individual regardless of their financial status, I believe that providing unlimited free water is neither practical nor sustainable. Therefore, government should ensure a fee for the maintainance and management purpose as well to avoid excessive consumption of water to prevent wastage.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you support guaranteed access to clean water but oppose unlimited free supply, arguing for a nominal fee. This addresses the central question and is reinforced in the conclusion. The example of an unattended faucet also gives your argument a relevant personal illustration. However, some parts are less fully developed: the claim that charging a fee will encourage conservation and fund infrastructure is asserted rather than explained, and the response does not explore how a fee could remain affordable for poorer households. To strengthen the argument, explain how a basic amount could be guaranteed free or subsidised while charges apply to higher use. This would extend your reasoning and address the implications of your position more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, moving from your position to the importance of conservation, a personal example, and a concluding recommendation. Paragraphs generally have identifiable purposes, and linking expressions such as “Although,” “Therefore,” and “Overall” help show relationships between ideas. Some connections are less smooth or precise: the second paragraph moves from global water scarcity to people’s failure to conserve without explaining the link, while the anecdote’s relevance to a household water charge could be made more explicit. The conclusion also repeats the recommendation without adding much synthesis. Develop clearer transitions between the general problem, your example, and the proposed fee, and use referencing that makes each link explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “fundamental human right,” “water scarcity,” “nominal fee,” “responsible consumption,” and “infrastructure.” These choices communicate the main argument, and some less common expressions show an attempt to discuss the issue precisely. However, several spelling errors and awkward or imprecise collocations reduce control, including “weather or not,” “nomial,” “comsumption,” and “maintainance.” Phrases such as “for the maintainance and management purpose” are also unnatural. Aim to check spelling carefully and learn common collocations as complete phrases, for example “maintenance of water infrastructure” and “charge a modest fee.” This would make your vocabulary more accurate and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in “Although I do agree…” and a conditional structure in “if things still keep going the same way.” The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors are present. The opening joins two independent clauses with a comma, and “Although I do agree … but I do not” uses two contrasting markers where one is needed. In the anecdote, “when I enquired with the security they casually said” needs clearer punctuation and sentence structure; the final sentence also has an awkwardly connected purpose clause. Practise separating clauses with full stops or suitable conjunctions, and check article use and sentence boundaries. More consistently controlled complex sentences would improve accuracy.
