Student answer (Band 6.0)

Water is one of the most abundant necessities of human life. Therefore, having an access to clean water is a basic right every human being should have. Thus every household should have a water supply that is provided free of cost by the government. I personally agree with the statement.

Water is very crucial for human life from drinking to doing usual cleaning chores, water is the basic need of every household. Clean water supply is one of the fundamental facilities government should provide free of charge. Otherwise, it can further increase the financial burden on government itself. For instance, if public do not have access to clean drinking water supply such as in rural areas of developing countries, under the given circumstances they are forced to drink dirty or contaminated water which can be the cause of multiple infection outbreaks. Consequently, government will have to spend more on the health sectors for the treatments and prevention of such diseases. Furthermore, it can also compromise the health of the citizens. Therefore, every household should be supplied with fresh water by the government to reduce the spread of waterborne diseases and also it is vital for human life.

In conclusion, water supply should be free for every house not only because it can create financial strain on the government due to disease outbreaks but because it is the basic right of every citizen in order to be alive and live a healthier life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear from the introduction (“I personally agree”) and conclusion, and you give a relevant reason: free clean water could prevent waterborne illness and reduce later healthcare costs. The example of people in rural areas drinking contaminated water supports this point, but the discussion is brief and the claim that free supply would reduce the government’s financial burden needs clearer explanation. The response also focuses mainly on health, with little consideration of how a free service might be funded or managed. The required minimum of 250 words is not met: the response contains 232 words, with 10 words copied from the prompt excluded from the count. Develop your reasoning further and add a second distinct supporting point.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction states your view, the body develops a health-related reason, and the conclusion restates your position. Linking expressions such as “For instance,” “Consequently,” and “Furthermore” help show relationships between ideas, and the argument is generally easy to follow. To strengthen progression, separate the different consequences more clearly and explain how each supports the claim that water should be free. The body paragraph contains several points in one long sequence, while “Furthermore” introduces a health consequence that is closely related to the preceding disease point. More precise referencing and less formulaic linking would make the connections smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “contaminated water,” “infection outbreaks,” “financial burden,” and “waterborne diseases.” These choices make the subject clear, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several word combinations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “an access to clean water,” “usual cleaning chores,” “multiple infection outbreaks,” and “health sectors.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Aim to learn vocabulary in common combinations and check whether a noun is countable or whether a phrase is idiomatic. More precise wording would also help distinguish the cost of providing water from the later costs of treating illness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple statements and attempts at complex sentences, including a conditional structure beginning “if public do not have access” and a result clause introduced by “Consequently.” The main argument remains understandable, but some errors in sentence structure, articles, agreement, and punctuation are noticeable. For example, “Water is very crucial for human life from drinking to doing usual cleaning chores, water is the basic need” joins two complete ideas with only a comma. “Every human being should have” also needs a clearer grammatical link to “a basic right,” and “if public do not” has an agreement problem. Use full stops or conjunctions to control long sentences, and check article use and subject–verb agreement.
