Student answer (Band 6.5)

Water is the basic necessity of humans as it is integral for their survival on earth and in my opinion, every home should have its free access. Clean water should never be a luxury for poor.

According to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, water is an essential component of physiological needs and is placed at the bottom of the hierarchy as the core element for survival. Humans cannot function to their full potential if the physiological needs are not fulfilled and it is a delimma that humans have to strive for its free and easy access. Paying for clean water is as absurd as paying for the clean air to breath.

Water existed on earth around many years ago before the hint of life on it and it used to cover a significant proportion of earth. As the population grew, the percentage of water that could be readily consumed significantly dropped commonly reffered to as imbalance of supply and demand. Living in Pakistan, I have experienced paying water bill to WASA every month since childhood. The residents of Karachi spend a significant portion of their salaries in lieu of access to clean water in their homes, which is exploitation of their basic human rights.

In summary, money should be spend on preserving the water and removing the contaminants rather than charging for its access. In present times when inflation is a significant issue for every human being, they should not have to worry about water after hustling for other resources which are man made.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the opening: you believe every home should have free access to clean water, and the conclusion reinforces this view. You address the human-rights aspect and support your argument with the Maslow reference and examples from Pakistan, including water bills and the cost faced by Karachi residents. These relevant details show a sound response to the task. However, some points are asserted more than explained: for example, the claim that charging residents is “exploitation” would be stronger with a clearer account of how costs affect access or household welfare. The discussion of water’s history and supply also needs a more direct link to why household access should be free. Developing these connections would make the argument more consistently persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present supporting points, and a conclusion restates your recommendation. The progression from water as a basic need to personal and local examples is generally easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “According to,” “As the population grew,” and “In summary.” At times, however, the links between ideas are not fully explicit. The historical point about water covering much of the earth moves quickly to population growth and then to water bills, so the reasoning feels compressed. Some references, such as “its” in the discussion of access, could also be clearer. More deliberate transitions and clearer links between each example and your central claim would strengthen cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “physiological needs,” “supply and demand,” “contaminants,” and “basic human rights.” These choices help communicate the main argument, and the local examples give the language a relevant context. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “a significant portion” and “in lieu of.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “free access” is less precise than “free access to clean water,” while “spend salaries in lieu of access” does not express the intended meaning naturally. Spelling slips such as “delimma,” “reffered,” and “breath” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural collocations and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the conditional structure in “Humans cannot function … if the physiological needs are not fulfilled” and the time clause beginning “As the population grew.” Most of the meaning remains clear, and the response includes some effective sentence variety. Some grammatical errors persist, however. In the opening, “Water is the basic necessity of humans” would be more natural as “Water is a basic human necessity,” and “every home should have its free access” has an unclear possessive construction. The sentence beginning “Water existed on earth around many years ago” also has an awkward time expression and tense choice. Review articles, possessives, verb forms, and sentence punctuation, while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
